Wie is Hennie Le Roux...

Hennie le Roux

Former Springbok Hennie le Roux is one of the real legends of the then University of Port Elizabeth, now the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU). Hennie was a member of the all-conquering Bok World Cup squad in 1995 and played in all six matches - including the final.

Hennie was born in Grahamstown and attended Graeme College. He represented Eastern Province at the Craven Weeks of 1985 and '86.

As a student at UPE from 1987 until 1991, he played first team rugby and was once voted as the University's Sportsman of the Year. He played flyhalf for Eastern Province in 1990 and 1991.

After he completed his studies (BA and HDE) at UPE, he moved to the then RAU - now UJ - where he completed an honours in Sports Management.

Hennie played for RAU in the national club championship in 1992 when they beat Harlequins 40-22 in the final.

He was selected for Transvaal and scored 92 tries in his 252 appearances in the red and white jersey. He was a member of the teams that won the Currie Cup in 1993 and 1994 and also in 1999 (as the Golden Lions).

Hennie represented the Springboks in 51 matches, 27 of those were Test matches. He made his debut in 1993 against France and played his last Test against Wales in Cardiff in 1996.

These days, Hennie is a regular face and voice on the SuperSport channels where he shares his expertise with the viewers.

Le Roux has been impressed with the standard of play in the FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International and feels that the competition is a marvellous opportunity for students to be noticed by the big unions.

Hennie invites his old teammates from his UPE and RAU days to keep in touch.
