Try-ace Smid climbs the charts
It's taken new FNB UCT star Rayn Smid just one full game at this level to propel himself right into the midst of the top try-scorers in the 2012 FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International.

The loose forward - who turns 20 next month - scored four tries in UCT's 66-2 demolition of FNB TUT on Monday night; joining inspirational NMMU captain Jaco Swanepoel as the leading forward try-scorer.
Smid, a Craven Week player in 2010, made his debut against FNB UJ the week before as a replacement but clearly enjoyed his first start in the Varsity Cup by grabbing four tries.
Swanepoel also scored on Monday (against UJ), and with Smid is now just one try behind the new leading try-scorer in the competition, FNB NWU-Pukke winger Andrew van Wyk (pictured).
Meanwhile, UJ flyhalf Guy Cronjé is fast closing the gap on FNB Shimlas' Nico Scheepers as the top goalkicker in the 2012 tournament.
Winger Scheepers, the form goalkicker up till now, scored just two points in his team's 7-20 defeat to the FNB Maties - whilst Cronjé slotted six conversions for a matchday tally of 18 points.
Scheepers is currently on 32 points, followed by Cronjé (30 points), UCT's Nick Holton (26), UP-Tuks' Wesley Dunlop (26) and the top try-scorer, Van Wyk, with a tally of 25 points.
