When size doesn't matter

At only 1.78 metres tall and weighing a mere 80kg, former Stellenbosch star Breyton Paulse defied the odds with Varsity Cup-like tenacity to become an unlikely Matie in Green and Gold.

Paulse began his bright rugby career at the University of Stellenbosch - having been a 200 and 400 metres South African Schools champion up till then.

Breytjie (as he is affectionately referred to across the rugby-playing world) was destined for a life as a professional rugby player, something that did not seem possible (because of his size) until his Maties days.

However, his speed served him well enough to become the name that is still synonymous to SA Rugby today; having earned 64 Test caps and playing another ten tour matches for the Springboks between 1996 and 2007.

Breytjie told varsitycup.co.za that upon his enrolment at Stellenbosch University he immediately recognised the opportunities provided by the university and grabbed them with both hands.

"As great as a rugby career is, it is important for players to be aware of the importance of education," said the Koue Bokkeveld-born ace who once thought teaching was his calling.

"University level is a great platform to enjoy the game you love with mates and still get an education," he concluded.

Paulse juggled his books and his boots before becoming a full-time Western Province and Stormers player.

As he looks back at his impressive career, he wishes the Varsity Cup tournament had been in existence in his time.

He believes, due to its rapid growth, that it's a phenomenal platform for launching careers - not only in South Africa but internationally too.

Breyton, who is 34 years old, may have hung up his boots, but this former Bok has not given rugby up entirely. He spends his days behind the mic on pay channel SuperSport as one of their Varsity Cup commentators and has recently joined sport24.co.za as a columnist.
