Getting to know Martin du Toit

We spoke to FNB NMMU back Martin du Toit - the Madibaz's Hertz Captain's Choice - after his team's 16-26 opening-day Varsity Cup loss to the FNB NWU-Pukke last Monday.

(1) Where did your love for rugby start? At school or university?
"I have been playing rugby from a very young age. I have an older brother who I've been playing with since I can remember. It has played a major role in (me) growing up, but I never really took it too seriously until my final year at school."

(2) You are new to the NMMU Rugby Club. Have you enjoyed yourself so far?
"I am enjoying the club very much. We are a fun group of guys together, so my experience thus far has been excellent."

(3) In the first Varsity Cup game you moved from flyhalf to fullback, what is your preferred position?
"I actually prefer flyhalf, but I played (at) fullback for three years in my Western Province junior days. To be honest, I'm just happy when I'm out there on the field (playing rugby)."

(4) You won the Captain's Choice Hertz car against Pukke - are you enjoying this Varsity Cup perk?
"I haven't really utilised it as much as I wanted. We were very busy at training this week, but I'll definitely take it for a spin soon."

(5) How are you preparing for the Shimlas game - mentally and physically?
"I think we are well prepared. Our attitude is that we've got nothing to lose and everything to gain so we are giving it our all."

(6) What went wrong, in your opinion, in the game against the NWU-Pukke?
"I think a lot of the guys - myself included - were overwhelmed by this big moment that is the Varsity Cup. It was my first time playing in such a big competition and I don't think I expected it at all. We also struggled with possession in the first half and you can't score without the ball."

(7) Did you play as you practised, as a team?
"We tried to as far as I could tell. We made a few handling errors, which we could probably blame on nerves I guess, but other than that sometimes it worked... other times it didn't."

(8) Is there unity in the team?
"Yes definitely. We all back each other. You obviously get guys who are disappointed about not making the starting 23, but we support each other - always... which helps a lot."

(9) Are you excited about 'touring' Bloemfontein for Monday's Shimlas game?
"Yes, it's always nice to tour and experience the vibe at other universities."

(10) Do you believe in home-ground advantage?
"I think it makes a difference, but I also believe that if you are good enough, no matter where you play, you will be able to succeed."
