Fresh start for TUT

After collecting the Wooden Spoon in last year's Varsity Cup, and narrowly escaping relegation in the play-off match against CUT afterwards, it's time for a fresh start for FNB TUT.

Experienced coach Deon Boardman, who was brought in at the last minute to take charge of the all important promotion/relegation match, is up for the challenge to have a much improved season this time round.

Boardman told varsitycup.co.za to expect major changes this year with what will be an "almost completely different side" with a fresh batch of TUT Vikings.

"We're starting almost from a clean slate to improve on last year," Boardman stressed.

The Vikings will assemble for a training camp at Doppies Hoek at the Hartebeespoort Dam from January 12 to 15.

"We'll be doing our team building, planning our strategy and getting some much needed time together before the Varsity Cup," Boardman explained.

"We're not as fortunate as some of the other sides and don't get the same amount of time to train together, so this camp will be crucial."

During the camp the coach will also be able to make a call on who will be the captain this year, which remains an open race at this stage with loose forward Wikus Botes having done a good job - under trying circumstances - in 2011.

TUT will finish their preparations for the new season with a warm-up fixture against one of Alberton or Benoni (their exact opponents are yet to be confirmed), followed by a clash against fellow Carlton League campaigners, Harlequins.

TUT's pre-season fixtures:
v Benoni/Alberton (TBC): Saturday, January 21
v Harlequins: Saturday, January 28
