Wheeler hunting Tiger blood

FNB UJ captain Justin Wheeler believes the best way to forget about his team's opening-day defeat to FNB Tuks would be to record a home victory in Round Two of the 2012 Varsity Cup.

The Men from Johannesburg were outplayed in virtually every facet of play last Monday, as Tuks beat them 23-8 in Pretoria.

Still the UJ skipper - who guided his side to the top of the log last season - remained in a positive frame of mind this week.

"So far we've had a slow but productive start (to the season)," Wheeler told this website.

"We're still learning a lot and doing plenty hard work in order to make a success of this whole campaign - both on and off the field."

Whilst not at all satisfied with last week's three tries to one defeat, the UJ loose forward believes the steep learning curve could only benefit the Men in Orange in the long run.

"Obviously, any team hates losing, but we took positives from the game and have worked hard on the negatives," he admitted, "we took it on the chin... and see it as a learning curve."

Looking forward to this coming Monday's second-round match against UCT, Wheeler emphasised that "the team's main approach was to take responsibility for their actions on the field", while also "keeping the ball and moving it into the right places on the field".

It goes without saying that the UJ skipper and his side are eager to redeem themselves - at home - against the defending champion Ikeys. (Kick-off 7pm.)
