In-form Wits win well
What must have been the coldest day in Johannesburg for the year resulted in an exciting win for FNB Wits over their Grand Challenge rivals Pirates on Friday evening at Wits University.
The 38-21 win over Pirates - with a four-try bonus point - moved the students from seventh to fifth on the log after Roodepoort lost to Varsity Cup outfit, FNB Pukke, in Potchefstroom this weekend.
Wits are now on 38 points; Pirates in sixth on 36 and Roodepoort in seventh on 34. Wits can still make it into the semifinals if they can get positive results from their remaining fixtures against UJ (Home); Roodepoort (Home); Alberton (Away) and Union (Away). Rustenburg Impala is currently in fourth with 43 points.
The last four fixtures will definitely be crackers for Wits.
FNB Wits started of great with tries coming from lock Katlego Ntsie, prop Pierre du Toit and an absolute individual brilliant try from flyer Riaan Arends. Flyhalf Kyle Peyper converted all three tries and added a penalty. Pirates responded with a converted try of their own to leave the half-time score at 24-7 to Wits.
In the second half the game was open which resulted in Wits scoring two more tries, both through Man of the Match Thato Mavundla (flanker).
Pirates also pulled back two tries which was both converted which left the final score at 38-21 for the hosts.
