Quarters run-in no easy task
Wednesday night saw the quarterfinals of the Steinhoff UCT Internal League take place, with all 16 teams in action on the night. Teams knew it was not going to be an easy outing with the knockout stage now in place.
Steinhoff Wild Boys were up against Spanners in the first match of the evening. This too was the first Section A clash as both teams where playing for a spot in the semis.
It was a balanced match with the half-time scores leved at 5-5, with tries from Carl Lewis for Spanners and newly recruited Luke Wright for Wild Boys. It was, however, the try of substitute Roland Heideman that won the match for the Wild Boys.
Steinhoff Panthers played a blinder against Steinhoff Ikhaya as they won their match comfortably with a 12-try rampage. With tries coming in at will, Ikhaya looked a well beaten team with only the referee's whistle saving them from the 100-point hiding that Panthers were planning.
Steinhoff Magic Lions had a tough encounter in their game against Steinhoff Clarendon. Another tight match saw the Lions scrape through as Clarendon where pushing until the end. Time, unfortunately, was not on their side as they now have to contend with playing for pride in section A.
Stienhoff Nadoes and Steinhoff Cobras didn't have it all their way against their somewhat weaker opponents. Steinhoff Ubumbo, who where without most of their key players due to injury, held the Cobras off for all of 15 minutes in the first-half. The Cobras then found their momentum and scored six tries past Steinhoff Ubumbo.
The Nadoes match was a similar affair against Steinhoff Catsville as they to had to be patient in waiting to break the deadlock. Once they got going the tries almost came at will.
On the evening it was a good showing from all the teams as this league keeps growing in strength. Next week sees Section B playing their semifinals with all participants in that section in action while Section A is on a bye.
