Semi delight for Shebeen Boys
The Shebeen Boys will face the Panthers in the Plate Final of UCT's Steinhoff Koshuisrugby League after hard-fought semifinal wins over the Turtles and Smuts, respectively.
Shebeen Boys might have won their match with a three-try margin, but it wasn't a true reflection of the match.
The Turtles team, consisting of UCT Under-19 players, in the form of Big John and Steven White in the pack, dominated the scrums as Turtles kept pressing forward. Big John broke the Shebeen Boys' defensive line numerous times with his aggressive running style only to be stopped inches from the tryline, with Shebeen then winning the balls in the ruck.
The Shebeen Boys, however, used their overall experience and took full advantage of Turtles' mistakes. The game, however was one of the better matches in this specific section for quite some time.
The Panthers also had a very tough game against Smuts, who have improved every single step of the way in this 2011 campaign.
Panthers put Smuts on the back foot after scoring an early try. Smuts, however, shrugged off the setback and scored a try of their own to level matters. Panthers then extended their lead but the gutsy Smuts team kept plugging away and were rewarded for their hard work. Panthers, however, held their nerve - despite allowing Smuts to score late in the match.
The CVU Vikings had a good run against Ikhaya, beating them 51-0. It was a better looking Ikhaya team that still has much to learn when it comes to defensive structures. They looked good on attack, but shaky on defence, and the Vikings took full advantage of this.
The only Section A match played on the evening was the one between Claredon and Cats.
This, too, was a fair competition between the two teams as the match could have gone either way. Claredon, however, used their chances well and silly handling errors by the Cats cost them the match.
