Bastion fight off Cobras attack
Steinhoff Bastion were able to withstand a comeback from the Steinhoff Cobras to hold onto a 26-24 victory to start their 2012 Steinhoff Koshuisrugby Championships campaign on a winning note.
A breakaway from UJ side Bastion against the run of play lead to the opening try, where scrumhalf Ethan Searle darted round the fringes of a ruck to score.
Big lock Zane Janse van Rensburg added two more tries for Bastion, while inside centre Ben Verhoef had a good night with the boot.
The Cobras - who hail from UCT - also had something to cheer about, as their forwards were strong in the set-pieces and lock Zach Buekman was rewarded with a deserved try. The forwards also produced a well-organised rolling maul that Bastion could not contain for a try.
After repeated infringements for hands in the ruck, the Cobras lost a front ranker to a yellow card and with three converted tries apiece it was an early penalty struck by Verhoef that ended up separating the two sides at full-time.
