AB batting for the Varsity Cup

Proteas ODI and T20 captain AB de Villiers - a rugby player of note during his school days - has given his thumbs up to the FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International.

"I'm a big rugby fan," De Villiers told varsitycup.co.za during a brief break from filming an advert for one of his team's sponsors in Cape Town on Wednesday. "I watched a bit of the Varsity Cup last year and also caught some of Monday's action (earlier this week).

"It's a very exciting tournament, and it seems to be producing great talent, which can only be good for our country."

Of course, as a former UP-Tuks Alumni, the likeable Proteas star will always support the Men from Pretoria - despite having not played a game of rugby for them; that after being a Craven Week representative (at flyhalf) in his Matric year at Affies.

He revealed: "I spent a few months at Tuks after school, it was a great time in my life! I never played any rugby there, but I played a bit of cricket for Tuks."

De Villiers, who turns 28 next weekend, has already played 71 Tests (where he averages 49.42 - with a highest score of 278 not out), 124 ODIs (where he averages 47.56) and 33 T20 intertionals (where he averages 23.23 at a strike rate of 123.01) for his country; after making his international debut in 2004.

His next, and immediate, assignment with the Proteas will take him to New Zealand - a country he has never toured before as an international cricketer.

"I'm really looking forward to it," he enthused ahead of the ten-game, six-week tour. "It's a different challenge and the experience will be great!

"We're obviously going to have to adapt our games a bit [after playing here against Australia and Sri Lanka], but I'm sure we'll be able to do so."
