CUT testing their depth

FNB CUT are hoping to unearth some exciting young talent for their defence of their Varsity Shield title next year when they travel to Wellington on Sunday to take part in the annual USSA Week.

The Varsity Shield champions have lost the majority of their players to the Free State provincial set-up and they will treat the week in Wellington as an opportunity to test their depth and see whether some of the players coming through their ranks have what it takes to cut it in the Varsity Shield.

CUT team manager Skillie Bester told varsitycup.co.za: "We will be going there to play good rugby and give a good account of ourselves but the team has trained together for about a week only and we'll only be taking about five of our Varsity Shield players from last season.

"Our first game is against Pukke so it will be interesting to see how some of the youngsters cope with that," he said.

The timing of the USSA week means that most teams will be bringing depleted squads to Wellington and Bester admitted that this would "level the playing fields", but he made it clear that head coach Theuns Hanekom would be using this tournament as a building block for their Varsity Shield campaign next year as they seek to retain their title and qualify for the Varsity Cup in 2013.

CUT face Varsity Cup team, FNB Pukke, in their first game on Monday, July 4.

Their opponents in the matches on Wednesday, July 6 and Friday, July 8 will be determined by results in previous fixtures.
