Last-gasp Wits denied...
Every time FNB Wits and Raiders play each other, you can be assured of an entertaining match from minute one to the last. Saturday, at the Billy Jardine Stadium (Raiders' home ground), was no different.
A disallowed try by Heinke Hartdegen in the dying seconds of this Pirate Grand Challenge match changed the result in favour of Raiders.
With the score 39-34 in favour of Raiders and the students on attack, the try was disallowed by the referee calling a knock-on. The score stayed at 39-34 in favour of the Men from Raiders, but the students collected two valuable bonus points to put them three points behind Pirates and in sixth position on the log. (Log TBC.)
With a total of 14 points in the match, Wits flyhalf Kyle Peyper has now reached 152 points for the season and is currently still in first place on the overall point-scoring charts.
Wins for Wits' second XV, U21s and U19s moved them up on their respective Predator Logs. The second XV are up into fourth place, the U21s moved up to third position and the U19s are now joint fourth on 30 points.
* This week FNB Wits will be competing in the Annual University Sport South Africa Tournament hosted by CPUT in Wellington.
Their first match is against losing FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International finalists, Tukkies, on Monday at 1.30pm.
