Fierce competition in CUT's opening round of FNB Res Rugby

FNB Varsity Cup, Koshuis Rugby

The defending FNB Res Rugby champions of CUT, the FNB Lions, had a bye in the first week of the 2018 Res Rugby League at CUT.

After the first week’s results it is clear that the competition for the 2018 crown will be intense and tough. In the first two games of the season, no team could score a win by more than 3 points.

The FNB Rhinos started their campaign with a solid performance by beating the FNB Tigers by 22 – 19, outscoring them by four tries to three. At the break, scores were tied up at 12-all, but the better fitness of the FNB Rhinos carried them home to their first win of the season.

In the main match of the day, the FNB Buffalo side lost their concentration in the dying moments of the match, allowing the FNB Falcons to slip in through the back door with a narrow winning margin of 19 – 18, with both teams scoring three tries a piece. The biggest difference lay in the goal kicking.

Preview
The FNB Lions will open their 2018 campaign with their match against the FNB Falcons, who surprized FNB Buffalo in the first round. Both these teams look like front runners in this year’s FNB Res Rugby campaign. On paper, the FNB Lions seem to have the edge on the “Birds”, but the FNB Falcons already showed the will play until the fat lady sings.

In the first match of the second round, the two old rivals, the FNB Tigers and FNB Buffalo, go head to head on the east campus clash. Both teams lost their opening fixtures to the season, and another loss could bring their season hopes for glory to an abrupt end at this early stage of the season.

Although it is still early days in the 2018 season, the results of the second round will provide interesting season expectations. It should leave one team clear at the bottom of the log, but also give an indication of who the primary front runners should be for the title of 2018 Champs – and, ultimately, who the 2019 FNB Varsity Cup Res Rugby representatives will be for CUT!
