FNB Maties versus the Ikey Tigers – three epic clashes

FNB Varsity Cup

The FNB Maties and FNB UCT have met in some epic FNB Varsity Cup encounters over the years and VarsityCup.co.za looks back at three of the best between the traditional rivals.

These two teams have lifted the prestigious Varsity Cup trophy an astonishing six times between them and have also delivered numerous Springboks and graduates over the course of history.

2008
The first epic match was the 2008 final, which saw a try in the final seconds clinch the trophy for the FNB Maties. Despite FNB UCT finishing higher on the log the final was played in Stellenbosch due to the lack of floodlights at the Green Mile and this was a definitive advantage for the FNB Maties.

Winger Henoe Stoffberg had kicked two penalties for the home-team as they led 6-5 at the break before future England Sevens Rugby player Matthew Turner dotted down to give the visitors the lead at 10-6. There was huge drama minutes later as TMO Shaun Veldsman ruled an FNB Maties try had to be disallowed after FNB UCT had used the white card to challenge the try. A drop goal narrowed the gap to 10-9 before winger Morne Jooste went over to secure the title for the FNB Maties and start an incredible three-year title-winning streak for the men in maroon. Among the players on the field that day were future American international JJ Gagiano, Blitzboks legend Kyle Brown and Super Rugby players Martin Muller, Tim Whitehead, Jacobi Adriaanse and De Kock Steenkamp.

2010
The next epic encounter was in 2010 when the FNB Maties completed a hattrick of titles as they edged FNB UCT 17-14 in Stellenbosch. FNB UCT had opened the scoring with an early penalty before tries by Tythan Adams (current Griquas player) and Charl Weideman had given them a handy lead. Newly named captain of the USA team Marcel Brache then kicked a penalty to make it 12-6 at the break. Danie Poolman, who went on to play for the Stormers and later for Connacht in Ireland, then scored the try which saw the home team go out to a 17-6 lead. A second penalty by Doug Mallet followed thereafter but despite a late try and conversion the visiting FNB UCT could not close the gap. A few famous faces were present that night with Scotland flanker Joshua Strauss, England flanker Don Armand and Stormers and Lions scrumhalf Nic Groom all taking the field at some stage.

2014
The most recent epic encounter was in 2014, when FNB UCT did the virtually impossible and beat the FNB Maties at the Danie Craven. This FNB UCT had something special going as they also beat the same FNB Maties team in the semi-final and staged one of the best comebacks ever to clinch the title in Potchefstroom against FNB NWU. On that fateful day at the DC the FNB UCT featured future Scotland international Huw Jones, CA Brive lock Jan Uys and Griquas lock Shaun McDonald. They were ruthless and despite having Springbok pivot Rob du Preez and Stormers fullback Craig Barry in their backline and Stormers and Canon Eagles lock Jan de Klerk in the pack the FNB Maties went down 33-16. The match also saw flyhalf Dean Grant, who had been recruited from FNB Maties for the season 2014, kick three conversions and two penalties for a personal tally of 14 points.

Make sure you do not miss the next epic encounter between these two powerhouses on Monday night at the UCT Rugby Fields. Get your tickets before they are sold out or tune in on SuperSport at 19:00, just make sure you witness the latest instalment of #RugbyThatRocks!
