FNB Wits head coach Hugo van As wants the Johannesburg-based university to stamp their authority on the competition
After being promoted to FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International from the Varsity Shield in 2016, Wits took the opportunity with both hands and finished fifth on the overall log in 2017, just missing out on the semi-finals.
FNB Wits head coach Hugo van As, explained that the 2018 season is about making the Braamfontein-based university a household name in the Varsity Cup rather than setting their ambitions too high.
“Varsity Cup 2018 is not for Wits to see if we can go higher or better than 2017. FNB Varsity Cup 2017 was an amazing year and a journey that will always be remembered. Our biggest challenge is to establish the Wits brand in 2018, if you look at the history of Varsity Cup, the team that was promoted last is always under pressure to stay in the Varsity Cup.
“As a team and university we want to stamp our authority and our brand on the Varsity Cup as a whole.”
Van As believes that FNB Wits can shake their tag as a small fish in a big pond this season but for that to happen, consistency is crucial.
“It would be great if we can set a standard and get away from the ‘small varsity’ syndrome. To achieve that we must be very competitive week in and week out. The team is hungry and excited for what lies ahead of us in 2018 and they understand that if we stay united in our goals and dreams anything is possible.”
FNB Wits kicks off their season against FNB UCT Ikeys on January 29 at 18:30 on the UCT Rugby Fields.
