Varsity Cup and 5FM look to the public for a new anthem

FNB Varsity Cup

Varsity Cup, in collaboration with 5FM, are looking to the fans in order to create a brand new anthem to replace the iconic “Back Your Boytjies” tune, in 2018.

Over the past decade Varsity Cup fans around South Africa have been rocking out to the "Back Your Boytjies" anthem every Monday night. It has become an familiar tune, fitting the "Rugby That Rocks" theme perfectly, with the AC/DC sounding song preparing fans for a night of rocking rugby. But as the competition progresses into a new decade, the time has come for something fresh.

Varsity Cup partners 5FM and DJ Rob Forbes will look to their listeners and Varsity Cup fans for an anthem completely inspired by the public.

The new anthem should contain the Varsity Cup official slogan – or at least capture the spirit – of “Make The Team” and “Rugby That Rocks” if possible.

The song should represent the whole of South Africa and should evoke a feeling of pride. Cross-genre and cross-generational ideas are encouraged – so that both rugby fans and non-rugby fans of all shapes and sizes can enjoy it.

Contributions can take the the form of:

  • Lyrics
  • Recorded demos
