FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International teams are kicking into gear ahead of the 2018 season
With Varsity Cup on the horizon, teams are already in the engine room as they aim to take university rugby’s highest honour.
Coaches country-wide are ensuring their charges are hard at work. University of Cape Town (UCT) head coach Christiaan Esterhuizen is delighted about the spirited competition in his squad.
“Pre-season is currently underway! There is a lot of enthusiasm and players are training hard in the gym and on-field to put their names forward for Varsity Cup selection.”
University of Johannesburg (FNB UJ) head coach Werner Janse Van Rensburg believes depth and the player’s fitness is made months before the season, rather than during.
“The main focus is building a good conditioning base to last the season as well as working with the group on basic playing methods and skills.”
While, North West University (FNB NWU) coach Jonathan Mokuena is less optimistic about preseason.
“Pre-season is not going as well as I wanted it to. Reason is that we have a lot of injuries that are hampering our preparation which is not ideal.” The former Blitzbokke captain continued, “But we are not going to moan about the things that we don’t have control over.”
