It is about more than the sport of rugby as the eight participating teams in the 2023 FNB Varsity Shield competition this year are also getting the chance to showcase their involvement in making a difference in the lives of their communities with the #ShowUs campaign.

FNB CPUT has partnered with the Passion Meets Purpose Foundation which seeks to address social issues among vulnerable populations through sport, as the foundation’s slogan indicates, “You Matter”.

The non-profit organisation was founded by Namhla Matwa, a Sport Management Masters candidate at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. She believes her purpose is to serve and assist those who are in need and less fortunate.

CPUT held an outreach campaign where they hosted a group of disadvantaged children from two different children's homes at the Zolani Sport and Recreation Centre in Nyanga. The main purpose was to highlight the use of sport not only as a tool on the field but as a means of socio-economic engagement.

Cherice Mangiagalli from CPUT’s Department of Sport, Art and Culture says the #ShowUs campaign is of utmost importance.

“There is an old cliche that says it takes a village to raise a child, and I think within our sporting program, our boys come from disadvantaged backgrounds and they get to plough back. They also can identify with these kids because they were there where these kids were not too long ago. It is also important for our little ones to see that it doesn't end where they are, there is always more to welcome.”

Varsity Cup is also calling on fans to take on the challenge and #ShowUs how you are choosing to lead the way to change in South Africa. Tag us in your social media posts and #ShowUs what you have done to make a positive impact in your community.
