FNB UP-Tuks want to grow their Help Hungry Students Initiative in 2024 to attract more partners in their quest to make a difference at the university.

According to the head of programmes for Tuks Rugby, Conrad Boshoff, Tuks’ aim with the initiative is to end the inequality on campus as there are students who go to sleep with empty stomachs.

With proceeds from the FNB Varsity Cup, food is provided needy students, says Boshoff.

“It’s quite simple, students have so many challenges, and if we can help in a small way (for example give food with the money we receive) we are glad. One thing, we do not take any praise for this because any human being wants to feel wanted and with this, we just try to make a difference. We chose to help in-house and our students are a priority.”

He adds: “Every year things get more expensive and with food it’s no different. Students have so many challenges for example studies and some of them may have bigger problems. If we can help just a little bit in regards to food we know they will be grateful.”

According to Boshoff, the initiative is seen as a win-win situation because of how impactful it is to the team.

“This is a club initiative. The team focuses on what they must do and anything to help students is a win-win for everybody.

“We are also looking to partner up maybe now and in the future with others to help students more. If we can make a difference in students’ lives and help them then that will make us happy.”
