The 2019 Varsity Cup is far from being decided, and the Orange Army will be counting on their chances and luck on making it to the top four.
We are slowly reaching the business end of the 2019 season. There are teams fighting to avoid relegation, teams fighting for a home semi-final and there are teams who have outside chance of upsetting the odds and qualifying for the last four. One of those sides is FNB UJ.
It certainly seems improbable, but if there is a will, there is a way. FNB UJ may be at the lower half of the table but the team is looking up and will continue to chase a knockout place. It is still mathematically possible for FNB UJ to go through but they would also need certain results to go in their favour.
Their chances though, will be boosted as they take on basement dwellers FNB UWC who are yet to pick up a win. FNB UJ captain Adrian Bester believes his team can take a lot of positives after a spirited defeat against champions FNB Maties.
“We had a great performance against Maties but had every opportunity to win the game. Just a lack of composure in the last 15 minutes cost us. We are taking a lot of positives out of the game but can still be better.”
Though the side are odds-on favourite to beat FNB UWC, Bester said his side won’t take this match for granted and will avoid being complacent.
“We are going all-out for Monday’s game. We will never underestimate any team in Varsity Cup. We expect a hard game down in Cape Town and it is important for us to finish strong.”
