Jonathan Mokuena picks his strongest FNB NWU team from the past four years

FNB Varsity Cup

FNB NWU’s Jonathan Mokuena has coached some of the most talented players the competition has ever seen, so it would only be right to get him to select his all-round Varsity Cup line-up from the past four years as he says goodbye to FNB NWU.

There is no denying the impact that Jonathan Mokuena has had on the North-West University and its players, having won the Varsity Cup competition in his first year as a head coach in 2016 and finishing second in 2018. After four years at the helm and 21 wins from 31 games, Mokuena is handing over the reins and saying goodbye to FNB NWU and Varsity Cup.

Choosing players from copious amounts of talent is simple, but choosing a captain is no easy task; considering the experience and leadership both Jeandré Rudolph and Louis van der Westhuizen provide. Mokuena says his choice would however be Van der Westhuizen, who is an all-rounder on and off the field.

Mokuena’s match day 23, a balanced team filled with tough characters, is as follows:

  1. Mashudu Mafela
  2. Louis van der Westhuizen
  3. Robert Hunt
  4. Johan Retief
  5. Walt Steenkamp
  6. Gideon van der Merwe
  7. Loftus Morrison
  8. Jeandré Rudolph

  10. Benhard Janse van Rensburg
  11. Dean Stokes
  12. Henko Marais
