FNB Varsity Cup powerhouses FNB Maties and FNB UCT Ikeys, as well as FNB Varsity Shield holders FNB CPUT will pit their strengths against the Stormers on Saturday, 11 January.
‘Varsity Day’ will take place at Florida Park in Ravensmead, and see an extended Stormers squad play in four separate 20-minute periods against Maties, UCT Ikeys, CPUT and a WP XV at the home of Tygerberg RFC.
The action will get underway at mid-day when the Stormers, now coached by former UCT mentor John Dobson, will play their first period at 13:30 against the Ikeys who he coached for the first three years of Varsity Cup – 2008-10.
Next up for the Stormers, at 14:00, will be 20 minutes against five-time Varsity Cup champions Maties – who saw their 2019 vice-captain Ernst van Rhyn graduate to the Super Rugby outfit.
The Stormers players will then take a break as the Varsity teams battle it out amongst each other in an early ‘recce’ with the 2020 Varsity Cup season kicking off on Monday, 3 February.
The final two 20-minute periods against a WP XV and CPUT will then end the day.
“We are very lucky to have some quality local University teams, with many of our current players having come through those structures,” Dobson told thestormers.com.
“The Varsity teams are all preparing for the Varsity Cup and Varsity Shield campaigns, so we know they will be giving everything out there to make an impression.
