The 2019 FNB Varsity Cup season has not taken too kindly to FNB Wits in recent weeks, with the Johannesburg outfit losing three matches on the bounce. The Witsies did however enjoy a bye this week, giving them an opportunity to nurse wounds, rest and prepare for their next clash against old foe the FNB UCT.
However, here has been a team that haven’t really had a bye of late, as they compete in a different facet of Varsity Cup, which is the ladies of Wits University, who are chasing the honour of being crowned Miss Varsity Cup for Wits at the conclusion of the round robin phase of the on-field shenanigans.
The winner of Miss Varsity Cup Wits will then go on to compete with all the other winners from the other universities, for the ultimate Miss Varsity Cup crown for 2019.
With regards to the procedure behind getting involved this year, Varsity Cup caught up with Wits Sport’s assistant marketing, Nandi Buthelezi.
“We posted an ad on our social media platforms and anyone who was interested simply had to request the application form, where we asked generic questions about the interested candidates. The questions were centered around Varsity Cup and why they entered the competition. We then had interviews with each candidate where we got to know what they are about, how much they know about Varsity Cup, and who their favourite player is among other things,” Nandi explained.
At the end of the whole process, 16 ladies were selected based on the interviews and the applications that were received.
With the number being so high and only one contestant being able to be crowned Miss Wits Varsity Cup, some form of competition had to be put in place as Nandi further explains.
“Different activities were planned for each week for the girls. They had to do a photoshoot one week, followed by attending Varsity Cup games and a spin class at the gym together. The girls even went as far as going on a hike and enjoying a touch rugby session.
“These activities were set out to get to know each individual, to see how they interact with the other ladies and to see how they handle different challenges,” Nandi Buthelezi concluded.
The 16 Miss Wits Varsity Cup contestants:

During the clash at the Wits rugby stadium between FNB Wits and FNB UCT, the contestants will be narrowed down to just a top 10 as the competition heats up. The crowning of the official 2019 Wits Varsity Cup for Wits will take place on the 25th of March, which will be FNB Wits’ last home game in the log phase of the campaign.
