FNB UJ rising star Odwa Nkunjana has undoubtedly seized the moment in this season’s 2019 Varsity Cup campaign.
In the heart of the Orange Army’s backline lies a spark; a spark that has ignited FNB UJ and has been a catalyst in their recent revival — that spark is Odwa Nkunjana.
The young player who came through the ranks of the FNB UJ Young Guns setup has relished the opportunity to play in the Varsity Cup. Nkunjana’s ‘coming of age’ has seen him bag five tries in the Varsity Cup and he has shouldered the responsibility of being FNB UJ’s main man.
Blessed with blistering pace and possessing tactical nuance, Nkunjana can draw similarities with former FNB UJ great Aphiwe Dyantyi. When asked who his idol was in world rugby, Nkunjana didn’t look any further and acknowledged Springbok starlet Dyantyi.
“Aphiwe Dyantyi, he's my inspiration because since I got to UJ ,he has been a mentor to me. He used to teach me what he knows about rugby and he would guide me at sevens and even at 15-man rugby.”
Nkunjana who wants to write his own history says he’s glad he chose rugby and that he one day dreams of playing for the Springbok Sevens.
“I’m very happy because I've reached my goal to play for the Varsity Cup team and I'm humbled that I'm playing there. My goal for this year is to be the top try scorer for UJ and I also want to go play for the Springbok Sevens rugby academy team.
Nkunjana said he feels that the young FNB UJ first team can still go along way and says they are gaining confidence by the week and will be focused on collecting maximum points against basement dwellers FNB UWC on Monday night.
FNB UJ will be huge favourites coming into this match and Nkunjana will undoubtedly want to extend his try scoring run as we reach the business end of the 2019 Varsity Cup.
