In Episode 2 of The Tour 2020 we finished a laugh-a-minute afternoon of filming at Wits University by catching up with star guests at the Jo’burg Derby.
The Lions’ Tyrone Green and Wandisile Simelane, Wits rugby alumni you must remember, were in attendance and the tense encounter reminded Green of his greatest FNB Varsity Cup memory in the blue of Wits.
“The game against Maties [in 2018], when we ended up drawing the game. I ended up scoring the last try of the game. We drew the game [30-30], though we would have liked to have won the game as I scored a ‘nine-pointer’…” remembered Green.
That day, in the early days of ‘Point-of-Origin’ tries, there was some confusion whether the fullback-come-wing’s try was the game-winner, -drawer or if it counted only as a consolation.
“It was one of the biggest moments of my Varsity Cup career as getting a result against Maties doesn’t happen any day. I’ll never forget that moment; the crowd, the boys around me in the team… everyone went crazy.
As it happens, on Monday Wits scored another long-range try and this time it was the match-clincher – handing Wits their first ever Varsity Cup win over ‘noisy’ neighbours FNB UJ.
