FNB UKZN finally beat FNB WSU in a nail-biting match this past Monday to break their winless run of straight defeats against the Eastern Cape outfit. The visitors won the match by a single point.
The men from the KwaZulu-Natal finally defeated their voodoo team FNB WSU to put to an end their long-lasting continuous winless record against the men from uMthatha.
This past Monday, the Impi’s finally put down the mighty Walter Sisulu University side after three back-to-back defeats ranging from as far back as two seasons ago. In 2017, FNB WSU picked up a convincing win of 42-21 at the Buffalo City Stadium.
The voodoo continued in 2018, after FNB WSU completed a cup double against the men from the coast. These were away at the Howard College Stadium during the group phase of the tournament and at BCM in the semi-finals. The semi-finals defeat was the more painful one as the WSU fans had the advantage and bullied the Impi’s play with some intimidating support for their team, with the result ending in a close score of 30-21 to FNB WSU.
On Monday however, FNB UKZN’s duck against FNB WSU finally came to an end after an exhilarating match with some exquisite individual performances which saw the visiting team pip past the home side by a single point. 27-28 to FNB UKZN was the final score and the whole BCM stadium was silenced.
FNB UKZN’s scrumhalf Dylan Coombe put on an outstanding performance, scoring 18 points for the home side. Coombe’s excellent kicking earned the home side 13 points: three penalties and two conversions by the scrumhalf. To top those amazing statistics, the number nine added a try, taking to his name more than half of the away side’s score.
An exciting game of rugby and even more special night for UKZN Impi as they finally ended their form of back-to-back painful defeats against the All Blacks.
