  • Flying start for SPU, Varsity College, UWC and CPUT in FNB Varsity Shield Round 1

In the opening round of FNB Varsity Shield 2025, newcomers FNB SPU clutched a dramatic late winner against FNB UKZN in a hotly contested try-fest in Kimberley while FNB Varsity College got a flying start over FNB Madibaz. Both Cape Town teams were victorious as FNB UWC outplayed FNB WSU at home while FNB CPUT roared on home turf.   FNB SPU 41-37 FNB UKZN The FNB Sol Plaatje University (SPU) secured a hard-fought 41-37 victory over FNB UKZN in their clash at Suzuki Park in Kimberley. The match saw both teams battling fiercely, with momentum swinging back and forth throughout the contest. UKZN struck first when Siso France slotted an early penalty to put them 3-0 ahead, but SPU’s Khanya Kama quickly responded with a penalty of his own, levelling the score at 3-3.\ UKZN’s Jordan Ramsamy powered over from a rolling maul, with France adding the conversion. Tumelo Papane hit back for SPU with a well-taken try, followed by a successful conversion. UKZN’s Wela-Aphumelele Takata then crossed the line, with France making no mistake from the tee. SPU turned up the heat as Jan Potgieter and Leslie Ruiters dotted down, with Kama converting once and adding a penalty to give SPU a narrow 22-20 lead at halftime. The second half saw UKZN’s Zak Smith pounce for a quick try, but SPU’s Liyabona Maplanga responded with a brilliant solo effort, levelling the score at 27-27. Jaiden Faviers then powered over, with Kama adding the extras. UKZN kept fighting, as Nhlakanipho Bithelezi scored with France slotted another penalty, before adding a stunning drop goal to keep the visitors in touch at 37-34. Faviers sealed the deal with a late try under the posts, with Kama’s conversion securing the 41-37 win.   SCORERS FNB SPU 41 (22): Tries:  Tumelo Papane, Jan Potgieter, Liyabona Maplanga, Jaiden Faviers 2.   FNB UKZN 37 (20): Tries:  Jordan Ramsamy, Wela-Aphumelele Takata, Zak Smith, Nhlakanipho Buthelezi.   FNB Player That Rocks: Khanya Kama (SPU)   TEAMS: SPU: Aviwe Mpopo, Jan Potgieter, Cassie Botes, Kwando Dlamini, Tumelo Papane, Tyrone China, Sello Maketlo (Captain), Gareth Maree, Ethen Manus, Leslie Ruiters, Raees Sahabodien, Khanya Kama, Jayden Faviers (Vice/Captain), Liyabona Maplanga, Bokamoso Maphisa. The home team, FNB Varsity College, drew first blood after 11 minutes as they managed to wrestle a good try from a line-out drill, one of the star players in the team, vice-captain, Jacques Marais was at the end of the try. Fly-half, Frederick Marx hit the woodwork and failed to convert. 5-0 to FNB Varsity College. The match was a very physical end-to-end as both teams cancelled each other out to keep the scoreboard unmoved. The FNB Comets got another try in as the defensive work of Madibaz was again broken down when Marx offloaded a beautiful assist to Chandler Green who went over the line out wide. The fly-half converted successfully the second time out. The men from PE marked their presence in the match some minutes from the break as Sean Van Zijl caught the defense of the home team unaware running over a try, fly-half Conrad Raashied his teammate converting from a close range. The match went to the end of the first stanza with Varsity College leading 12-7. The home team didn’t waste any time into the second half as an entertaining full sprint from their eighth-man Johnathan Horak extended their lead fly-half making sure the score extended further to 19-7. Madibaz scored their second and final try through Kyle Erasmus who gave the away team a glimpse of hope to move his team into 14 points. It was a stream of tries then onwards from the Comets as Daniel Van Huizen, captain Abanye Mthembu and Jacques Marais all added points to complete the slaughter of the men from Madibaz. UWC picked up where they left off in the first half with persistent pressure on the WSU tryline. Tight head prop Keanuh Michaels goes over after a smart pick up and drive. Replacement UWC loose forward Danston Cloete scores with his first touch of the match. A rampaging five metre scrum sees Cloete pick up and dot the ball down. Outside centre J'que Huckins gets his second try of the evening. WSU try to attack from their own tryline but a loose pass is intercepted by the nimble Huckins who goes over untouched. • Players to watch in FNB Varsity Shield 2025

With the 2025 season of FNB Varsity Shield kicking off we take a look at this seasons players to watch and whose previous performances showcased their potential. Here is our selection for the players we think will be taking it to the next level and play a key role in their teams success. Frederick Marx  (FNB Varsity College) The Comets had an incredible debut season in 2024 reaching the final on their first attempt and  flyhalf Frederick Marx player a huge part in their success. The Glenwood old boy was their top points scorer and was nominated for the Suzuki Rookie of the Year award for his performances. Kyle Erasmus (FNB Madibaz) The Madibaz captain and hooker was their top scorer dotting down 8 times during the 2024 campaign. He will no doubt be at the back of the lineout driving mauls with ball in hand, but you can also find him out wide on the overlap. Siso France (FNB UKZN) The former Kearsney College boy, who made his home debut in the KZN derby against FNB Varsity College last year had such a big impact for the Impi that he was nominated for Suzuki Rookie of the Year. With more experience and maturity you can expect him to shine in his second season. Conwill Conradie (FNB UWC) The UWC scrummie was instrumental in marshalling the team to win the FNB Varsity Shield tournament in 2023. He was also named as the overall FNB Player of the Tournament that year. The Cape side struggled to find form last year in the Cup competition and were relegated, but expect Conradie to play a crucial role in the Shield competition if they are going to lift the trophy once again. Iwaan Bloys (FNB CPUT) The big centre has been a stalwart for the Tekkies since 2022 and you can be sure that he will using his speed and strength to break the line when CPUT are on attack and marshall the backline on defence. Sinalo Jivana (FNB UFH)   The Fort Hare speedster looked promising last season and this year will be starting at flyhalf for the Blues. Look out for him to add pace and vision in the midfield and be on the scoresheet consistently if the Eastern Cape side are live up to expectations. Zixesha Mangaliso (FNB WSU) Top try scorer for the WSU All Black last season. The hooker was a force behind the WSU driving maul which they used to great effect to reach the semi-finals. Keep an eye out for Zixesha to0 feature heavily again this year. We can't wait to see how the season plays out and which players will raise their hands and demand recognition. • UJ Orange Army eyes stronger start in FNB Varsity Cup 2025

After narrowly avoiding the relegation playoffs and finishing 6th in the 2024 FNB Varsity Cup campaign, FNB UJ will look to avoid the same mistakes in this year’s offering. The Orange Army showed moments of brilliance and scored some of the season's most memorable tries, but struggled to close out games they were controlling. The Orange Army have a mounting challenge in their opening match, facing CUT Ixias in vengeance from last year’s 23-19 loss in the round-robin phase.   “Its definitely going to be a tough one. For our opening game, we would be on the road, but for the first time in three years we will be getting an opportunity to start at home,” said Jonathan Mokuena, head coach of FNB UJ.   This shift in the team's schedule presents a unique chance to set the tone for the season.   However, the road to success has not been without setbacks. Mokuena acknowledged the loss of 10 players due to academic failures, a setback that added a layer of complexity to their preparations.   “I have lost 10 guys due to failing their exams. That was a bit of a bummer, but all universities are struggling with that,” Mokuena explained.   “These are all players that have been played nicely over their last two seasons, and this is their opportunity to try.”   Looking ahead, Mokuena stressed the importance of mental strength in overcoming these challenges.   “The big thing for me is the mental aspect. If you look at our scrum and lineout, I don’t think it was bad, it’s just that at times the focus wasn’t there,” he said.   This recognition of the team's mental fortitude as a key factor for success led Mokuena to take proactive steps in addressing this weakness.   “We brought in a mental coach, someone who has worked with NFL teams in the US,” Mokuena revealed.   Provisional squad (subject to change): Adriano Jackson, Alzeadon Felix, Angelo Dube, Asemahle Mafenyana, Berwyn Bosch, Bian Janse van Resnberg, Damian Bakker, Dylan Viljoen Flank, Francios Prinsloo, Gidaan Hurter, Gumi Leshoro, Jarred Jordaan, Jayden Ballie, Jayden Pringle, John Ford, Joshua Du Toit, Kamo Molefe, Liam Rowan, Marnus Swarts, Melusi Sibiya, Mihle  Matinise, Muzuva Gutu, Niel Hensen, Oela Blaawu, Reon Pretorious, Ruven Ferreira, Ryan Marimo, Sfiso Dlamini, Sibahle Phangela, Siyasanga Ali Gqaza, Siyemukela Ndlovu, Walter Moyo, Zian Cilliers.   Fixtures:  HERE   Tickets:  HERE     By: Karabo Peter

  • Madibaz believe they are on the right track to conquer FNB Varsity Shield 2025

Judo sessions and daily workshops on team standards and culture have become the norm for Madibaz rugby coach David Manuel's charges while preparing for the annual FNB Varsity Shield season. The students kick off their 2025 campaign against Varsity College in Durban on Valentine’s Day and they have been at it from dawn to dusk to avenge their nail-biting semifinal defeat to last season’s surprise package.   As is the Manuel way, there is a lot of love within the squad – albeit of the tough variety – and the players are certainly feeling it.   They have been up at 6.30am every day since assembling for their pre-competition camp on January 12 and, outside of breakfast, lunch and dinner times, have been living rugby and little else.   “ We have our judo sessions in the afternoon to get our guys mentally-resilient and physically tough. I think we’ve sometimes missed that on the field,” he explained.   “Our 11am workshops are to make sure that everyone is clear on our standards and cultural pillars as Mandela University. There’s a lot of education on what our weeks will look like during the season and how each player prepares.”   “I need to make sure I’m on the money in terms of having guys who have played in different environments.”   Manuel acknowledged that this year’s Madibaz squad was very young – the average age is 22 – but the more he saw of them the more he believed he was on the right track.   Madibaz have had the added advantage of training with and playing against the Eastern Province senior team, now coached by former Springbok mentor Allister Coetzee.   On Sunday, the students managed to put one over the provincial outfit, winning 29-24. While they lost their opening warm-up game against the SWD Eagles at Mandela University’s George campus a week earlier, Manuel said he had got what he wanted out of these fixtures.   “The boys are tired but they are a bunch of warriors.”   Provisional Squad (subject to change):   Hlombe Luyanda, Aqhamile Limba, Lunathi Njara, Marco Nortjie, Bahle Cengani, Liyema Nyendwana, Raashied Conrad, AJ Flemmin, Emihle Zaza, Imibongo Mvuleni, Ntando Mavuso, Lemeul Kramer, Yolisa Dladla, Chulumanco Limana, Lwando Davane, Kyle Erasmus, Tlhalefo Kabelo Moleko, Lindokuhle Mba, Baphole Jennings, Dewald Gerber, Thando Nogaya, Calvin Bosch, Sean Van Zijl, Dandre Van Jaarsveld, De Wet Goedhals, Ambrose Scholtz, Martinus Strydom, Corne Cloete, Johan Van Zyl, Arno Seal, Leon van der Merwe, Xolani Hlatshwayo, Schalk Cannon, Curwin Casper, Reece Masimla, Cameron Doyle, Layron Milborrow, Dillan Gordon, Caleb Friskin, Jaden Witbooi, Craig Lottering, Edward Kruger, Keenan Jantjies, Luyolo Mba, Mvelo Fipaza, Bukho Pantsi.   Fixtures:  HERE   Tickets:  HERE     By: Jesica Slabbert

  • UKZN Impi eyes top four finish in this year’s FNB Varsity Shield campaign

FNB UKZN is one team who need no reminder of why they should perform well in the 2025 Varsity Shield edition. This follows last season’s performance where the men from KwaZulu-Natal found themselves fighting for their lives in the final match of the round-robin stage, as they sought, by all means, to avoid relegation. FNB UKZN coach, Naseeb Abrahams has spoken confidently that the upcoming season will see a much improved IMPI team as much work has been done behind the scenes. “The off-season and our preparations have gone very well for us. There’s been a big improvement in terms of the culture we’ve laid with the team,” Abrahams explained. Having faced several challenges in the past few years such as injuries to key players in moments where they need them, as well as constant adjustments in their management setup, expectations for improved efforts and good results are at an all-time high for FNB UKZN faithfuls. Despite their performance in past years, FNB UKZN mentor Naseeb Abrahams has made it clear that a top four finish is what the IMPI side are eyeing for this year. “Top four is a must for us, it’s something that we are building for. We have had talks with the boys in terms of what our goals are, what we want to do and how we want to do it. It’s just about getting the performances done and really stepping up in moments where it matters this year.” For such high optimism, it is fair to say that FNB UKZN do possess strength and depth in their arsenal, such as players like rookie of the year nominee in the past year, Siso France who give the men from KwaZulu-Natal hopes of achieving their goal of a top four finish. “We have stabilized as a team. There are challenges as all universities will have challenges and so we are not different, but we are very optimistic for this season. We really believe that when our fans come through they are going to see a much improved team this year, they will see a team worth supporting,” concluded the IMPI Coach. Provisional squad (subject to change): Uli Walker, Ntokozo Ngema, Siyanda Dlamini, Lonwabo Nkalitshana, Owethu Mntwelizwe, Siyanda Nyathi, Khanyisani Ncube, Qhawe Nxumalo, Siso France, Jordan Ramsay, Mzwandile Khawula, Lwazi Ngcobo, Micheal Ize-Iyamu, Samkelo Mkhize, Aphelele Dlamini, Amahle Dlamini, Tinotenda Mazhindu, Mthomboyolo Buzani, Sikhona Ndulini, Wela Takata, Nhlankanipho Buthelezi, Zak Smith, Milowo Matebese, Minenhle Ngcamu, Juan-Lee Carolus, Raayke Maartens, Russel Fick, Singele Mkhize, Lwanele Gaba, Solami Sikutshwa, Somanga Jho, Ramutuku Masiteng, Ntobeko Mhlongo, Luthando Mhlongo, Jowan Visagie, Ovayo Jezile, Osman Taariq, Abulele Bolitini, Eloko Kayaeze, Olwakhe Mlambo, Phiwe Kunjana, and Mnotho Khumalo. • Consistency key for the determined FNB CUT Ixias

The CUT Ixias will be targeting consistency during the 2025 FNB Varsity Cup which will get underway on Monday, with the team from Bloemfontein heading to Gauteng to tackle the University of Johannesburg. FNB CUT ended their 2024 campaign in 7th place and were forced into promotion-relegation play-off against Nelson Mandela University which they won 64-16 to retain their spot in the Cup competition. Facing the Orange Army in their opening game away from home is a daunting task, even for the very best teams, but for the Ixias, it is a golden opportunity to start with a bang and make a bold statement. In recent years, the Ixias have fallen short of their own high expectations and have found themselves on the wrong end of the table too often. Consistency is something that has been lacking in their performances, but this is an area they have worked hard to address. Their new captain, Fafa Bester, also believes that the culture created within the squad during the pre-season is positive and will serve them well. “The Varsity Cup is like a sprint, and everybody wants to get out of the blocks with a great start, as each week becomes tougher and tougher,” said the loose forward, who can also slot in at lock. “It’s difficult to recover if you don’t, and that’s where the consistency you referred to comes into play—to stay in the battle. “The culture that has been built in the team throughout the pre-season is something that will carry us through the Varsity Cup this year. It will help us with preparation for the games ahead and in managing everything off the field. “For the first game against UJ away, we are primarily focused on our process and on what we need to do well to get rewarded. The pressure is on them at home, and considering the results of the last two seasons against us, they will be out to settle scores. But we know it’s all about arriving on the day and doing the job.” Monday’s game between the Orange Army and the Ixias at the UJ Stadium will kick off at 19:00. Provisional squad (subject to change): Tokelo Ntaopane, Leon Johan Franzsen, Sisipho Nofuya, Mamello Moshoaliba, Jakobus Cloete, Asekho Marubelela, Kevin Strydom, Jan Hendrik Bessenger, Luvuyo Selebalo, Vuyo Holiday, Juan Smith, Zachery Bester, Liam Prinsloo, Francois Bester, Adielson Gouveia, Helgard Bruwer, Jean Swart, Hope Seyaga, Raydon Swartbooi, JT Van Der Walt, Devinto Vergotine, Ian Klitzke, Opola Mgodeni, Neo Letoetsa, Armand Patricio, Tsebano Stemer, Matthys Corneluis Malan, Jean Louis Theron, Malcolm Lamont, Liam Pekeur, Clive Hartzenberg, Kamva Tetani, Jeric Estree, and Tiaan Naude.   Fixtures:  HERE   Tickets:  HERE

  • FNB NWU Eagles fully focused ahead of opener against Ikey Tigers

FNB NWU Eagles head coach Burger van der Westhuizen says his team will use this year’s FNB Varsity Cup tournament to correct last season’s mistakes. The Eagles had a good run last year, but were knocked out in the semi-finals in the 2024 campaign by UCT. They will be looking for revenge when they travel to Cape Town on Monday and aim to repeat the success they had in 2023 when the beat the Ikey Tigers 27-25 to be crowned tournament champions. Van der Westhuizen knows what is at stake heading to the Green Mile. “It's a very tough assignment, the first game of the season, huge amount of traveling, playing against the team that knocked us out at the semifinal last year,” said van der Westhuizen. “So, I'm fully aware of the intensity and the culture that's part and parcel of Ikeys team. “We are expecting a very, very tough game, they will always be up for the game, both physically and mentally.” Van der Westhuizen believes the North West based side ticked all the boxes for this season and the team is ready for the new challenge. “The boys have worked really hard off-season and a pre-season to prepare a good mindset for the season,” he said. He knows it will not be an easy task to face a tough test in the Varsity Cup opponents this season. “We're really looking forward to the new season – we are looking forward to the game in Cape Town as our first stop.”   Provisional Squad (subject to change): Zihan Bensch, Alethwa Buthelezi, Shaldon Cloete, Angelo Daniels, Guhan Du Bois, Jaco Du Toit, Divan Du Toit, Matthew Fortuin, Ricardo Fourie, Stehan Heymans, Naiden Jaarts, Logan Janeke, Stephan Krugel, Nico Liversage, Jordan Mcloughlin, MJ Mostert, Jason Oosthuizen, Isrome Phatudi, Francois Pretorius, Therlow Prins, Sean Roulston, Joubert Schoeman, Zack Serfontein, Ntobeko Shezi, Bradley Stanfliet, Stephen Taylor, Lachibo Tchokonte-Nana, TT Tlaka, Indiphile           Tyeda, Luan Van der Walt, Schalk van Schalkwyk, Chyle van Zyl, Tian van Zyl, Hanro Venter, Sanele Zungu.   Fixtures and tickets:   HERE

  • New-look champions FNB UFS ready to go to battle and defend their title

The defending champions, the FNB UFS Shimlas, are locked and loaded ahead of the 2025 FNB Varsity Cup, which will kick off on Monday when they face the University of Stellenbosch in Coetzenburg. The Shimlas will hit the road in round one of the highly popular and competitive tournament, and they will be fielding a largely new-look team compared to the one that earned them a second star in 2024. A total of 17 players who featured in the final last season are no longer available, but they will be fielding a team with experience—and an exciting one at that. If their warm-up match against the UJ in Vrede is anything to go by, they will stick to their DNA of attacking rugby and are sure to provide plenty of entertainment. While the Shimlas will have a target on their backs and fancy their chances of doing well, their new captain, Nkoka Ngobe, warned against complacency. “The word that we are avoiding is being too familiar with winning, being too familiar with the opportunity we're given to play,” said the player, who started at outside centre in the 2024 final. “Yes, we are defending champions, but we haven't achieved anything yet. The thing that people need to understand is that we can never be—and we don't have the attitude of being—too familiar with winning, because that breeds complacency. “We're taking it one day at a time, just like everyone else. I think no one can say that they have the upper hand this season. We take it one practice at a time, one game at a time, one week at a time, one month at a time. “You know, as you set daily goals, at the end, the cream will rise. You know, something special is coming.” Monday night’s eagerly anticipated encounter between Maties and the Shimlas at the Danie Craven Stadium kicks off at 19:00. Provisional squad (subject to change): Yaseen Arendse, Cornelius Jacobus Bezuidenhout, Wynand Johannes Botha, Aiden Christians, Hendrik Jacobus De Beer, Nqobeni Dlamini, Thomas Frederik Dreyer, Kirwin Curtley Du Preez, Kristof du Randt, Keehan Nahum Etson, Michiel Christiaan De Graaff Genis, Bradley Pierre Giddy, Rudolph Hattingh, Khanyisa Hlengwa, Ntokozo Hlophe, Vice Hofmeyr, Regan Isaks, Henry James Jonker, Hlumelo Klaas, Maynard Kleynhans, AJ Knoetze, Daniel Christiaan Kriek, Alex Lategan, Hermanus Faasen Hercules Laubscher, Stephanus Lourens Linde, Lilitha Lunqe, Kungawo Mehlomakulu, Ongeziwe Olulodwa Mobo, Loyola Uzile Mtwa, Nkoka Ngobe, Sandile Nzuza, William Conley Pieterse, Ben Pitout, Shaun Peter Ray, Janco Lawrence Scheepers, Liam Shamburg, DuJean Smit, Marno Gray Stopforth, Ramón Freddie Uys, Leyton Jawdin Valentyne, Johannes Alwyn Van der Linde, Henri van Heerden, Adriaan Johannes Van Niekerk, Gunter Van Rensburg, Johannes Jacobus Venter, Alistaire Vermeulen, Renier Viljoen, Christoffel Jacobus Visser, Marnus Gerbrand Winter, Siviwe Zondani.   Fixtures:  HERE   Tickets:  HERE

  • FNB Varsity College wants no regrets this season

It was a sensational debut campaign last year for FNB Varsity College as they displayed a true definition of what it means to be a dark horse in the FNB Varsity Shield competition. The newcomers impressed from the start and went on to the reach the final on their first attempt. Expect them to enter the 2025 competition with more confidence and eyes on the trophy. FNB Varsity Comets skipper and scrum-half Abande ‘AB’ Mthembu has expressed that feeling within the team following their impressive run last time out, emphasising the positive lessons they have gained.   “Last season was a period of learning and growing in confidence and maturity as a team. Our attention to detail and hand work was rewarded at times. But most importantly, it helped us gain experience at this level which will definitely benefit us this year,” said the scrum-half.   FNB Varsity College surprised many last year when they clinched a runners-up position in their first season, only losing out to an unstoppable joint highest record FNB Varsity Cup champions, FNB UP-Tuks, who were clearly on a self-correction season in the Shield campaign, successfully regaining their spot back to the premium competition as the Shield victors.   The level of competitiveness Varsity College brought into the competition last time out left many talking about their quality and perhaps future prospects of potentially earning a seat into the FNB Varsity Cup competition.   “This season our goal is to be prepared for every encounter, and pride ourselves in effort and detail. Our goal is to have no regrets once the season is done” said Comets Captain Mthembu. The Durban based side played a tightly contested warm-up match against a strong FNB Wits team as part of their final pre-season match before their FNB Varsity Shield campaign. The match was a high-scoring affair with the men from Gauteng managing to edge a 54-44 win.   “The Wits game was a good experience and a key piece of the puzzle before the campaign kicks off,” Mthembu concluded.     Provisional squad (subject to change):  Abande Mthembu, Anwill Prins, Bradley Moroney, Cade Latham, Chandler Green, Chritiaa Els, Chmani Nxoyi, Dallyn Beukes, Danie Van Huizen, Donell Francis, Dylan Walters, Enzo Van Niekerk, Frederick Marx, Garre Muller, Jacques Marais, Jonathan Horak, Juan Steyl, Khumo-Etsile Nkutha, Langalihle Dlamuka, Laython Nel, Mambo Mkhize, Mbuso Kweyama, Mignon Stevens, MJ Schoeman, Nkazimulo Mzolo, Okuhlekodwa Meyiwa, Philani Khoza, Reece Curtin, Robert Everson, Sinelifa Ncwana, Sivuyiswe Mpendu, Thabo Njapha, and Wade Williams.    Fixtures:   HERE    Tickets:   HERE

  • Gemmies ready to make their mark in FNB Varsity Shield debut

Sol Plaatje University’s rugby team, the Gemmies, are set to make history as they step onto the field for their inaugural Varsity Shield 2025 campaign. The Kimberley-based side earned their spot after beating FNB TUT in the promotion-relegation match after last year's tournament concluded.   As a young and ambitious squad, they have already proven their potential, showcasing resilience and commitment in their journey to the competition.   Head coach Jonathan Francke, a former professional player for Griquas, has played a crucial role in shaping this team. Most players have only played together since early 2024, but they have fast-tracked their development, achieving in one year what was initially planned as a three-year project.   The team’s success comes from clear goals and strong commitment. “We set out objectives early on, and the players bought into the long-term vision. Sacrifices made, both on and off the field, have been key,” Francke explained.   Qualifying for the Varsity Shield was no easy feat. With just 30 players, a demanding schedule, and injuries, the Gemmies overcome significant challenges, including facing TUT twice in the qualification process.   Under Francke’s guidance, the team developed an exciting playing style. “Our main goal is an attacking game, but that starts with hard work on defence,” he noted. The off-season was spent building strength, refining ball-handling skills, and mentally preparing for the competition.   While the team has standout players, Francke emphasises that success comes from unity. “We have players with the ability to stand out, but they still require the team to be the best they can be,” he said.   Being part of the Varsity Shield is a major milestone for the university and a boost for the Kimberley community. “The support has been fantastic. Everyone wants us to succeed,” Francke shared.   As they enter their first Varsity Shield campaign, the Gemmies aim to make an impact and retain their place in the competition. “Our goal is a successful tournament and staying in the competition next year,” Francke affirmed.   With determination and unity, the Gemmies are ready to take on this challenge and prove they belong on the Varsity Shield stage. FNB SPU's opening game is against FNB UKZN on 14 February, 5pm at Suzuki Stadium. Fixtures and tickets HERE .
