FNB Varsity Cup Round 6 delivered big moments in the race to the semi-finals, with the Orange Army strengthening their charge after seeing off a struggling Ixias outfit. FNB UP-Tuks produced a stunning comeback from 14 points down to defeat the UJ Comets and move to the top of the standings, while FNB UFS Shimlas boosted their chances with a vital bonus-point win over defending champions Ikey Tigers. Meanwhile, in Stellenbosch, the Maroon Machine held their nerve to secure a narrow four-point victory over FNB NWU Eagles.

Here is our selection for standout players from round 6.

Jean Fourie (FNB UP-Tuks)

FNB UP-Tuks came from 5-19 deficit to record a 27-24 victory as they continue the hunt for a home semi-final. Jean Fourie was at the thick of things for the Stripe Generation in their hard-fought triumph. With a hat-trick of tries Fourie produced an outstanding performance. Tuks dominated the set-plays, Fourie was outstanding in lineout throws and mauls scoring three tries and earning himself a player of the match in the process.

Maynard Kleynhans (FNB UFS Shimlas)

Another rock-solid shift from the tireless forward. Dominant in the lineouts, relentless on defence and full of energy around the park, he also secured several crucial turnovers. It’s no surprise the Currie Cup champions, the Griquas, moved quickly to secure his signature.

Ruan van Willing (FNB NWU Eagles)

The FNB Eagles flyhalf dictated the tempo of the match from start to finish, almost inspiring his side to an impressive win at the Danie Craven. He marshalled the defense superbly on the backfoot while smartly knitting his team’s attacks together. Van Willing also displayed some fine goal kicking skills in an unforgiving Stellenbosch wind and was at the heart of every impressive move created by the Eagles.

Jordan Davids (FNB CUT)

The Ixias flanker delivered a standout performance in a losing cause. He was tireless on both attack and defence, covering every blade of grass. The only thing missing from an excellent outing was a try.
