Varsity College captain Abande Mthembu praises team for a positive season

Sitting third on the log, captain Abande ‘AB’ Mthembu admits debutants FNB Varsity College have had a dream start to the 2024 FNB Varsity Shield competition.

“It’s been a great experience. I think for the most part the closeness of our group has been reflected by our results and our ability to come back from difficult situations.

“Our fans have been supportive; our management does an amazing job to make sure everything runs smoothly. I’d like to thank our VC supporters for always being there for us and backing us, it makes a massive difference.”

After starting with three consecutive victories, Varsity College were brought back to earth when they suffered a massive 21-75 defeat against log leaders FNB UP-Tuks in Pretoria.

Mthembu says they only have themselves to blame after they were struck by reality.

“The loss is a reality that we have to take responsibility for and accept. We let ourselves down, I felt that we were in the game after the first 20 minutes but after that, our error rate gave Tuks the platform and opportunity to convert our errors into points. It doesn’t define who we are as a team and how our season will finish.”

Mthembu has asked for unity from his team and for their sights to remain on their main objectives.

“It’s been a very positive for season for us, there’s some exciting things ahead and we just want to take it one week at a time. Our weekly objectives allow us to stay engaged and present enough to deal with the task at hand and more importantly to enjoy the process and experience of the campaign.

“Our message as a team is to stay in it and keep fighting for each other every week. Anything that tests our unity can only make us stronger.”
