  • Flying start for SPU, Varsity College, UWC and CPUT in FNB Varsity Shield Round 1

In the opening round of FNB Varsity Shield 2025, newcomers FNB SPU clutched a dramatic late winner against FNB UKZN in a hotly contested try-fest in Kimberley while FNB Varsity College got a flying start over FNB Madibaz. Both Cape Town teams were victorious as FNB UWC outplayed FNB WSU at home while FNB CPUT roared on home turf.   FNB SPU 41-37 FNB UKZN The FNB Sol Plaatje University (SPU) secured a hard-fought 41-37 victory over FNB UKZN in their clash at Suzuki Park in Kimberley. The match saw both teams battling fiercely, with momentum swinging back and forth throughout the contest. UKZN struck first when Siso France slotted an early penalty to put them 3-0 ahead, but SPU’s Khanya Kama quickly responded with a penalty of his own, levelling the score at 3-3.\ UKZN’s Jordan Ramsamy powered over from a rolling maul, with France adding the conversion. Tumelo Papane hit back for SPU with a well-taken try, followed by a successful conversion. UKZN’s Wela-Aphumelele Takata then crossed the line, with France making no mistake from the tee. SPU turned up the heat as Jan Potgieter and Leslie Ruiters dotted down, with Kama converting once and adding a penalty to give SPU a narrow 22-20 lead at halftime. The second half saw UKZN’s Zak Smith pounce for a quick try, but SPU’s Liyabona Maplanga responded with a brilliant solo effort, levelling the score at 27-27. Jaiden Faviers then powered over, with Kama adding the extras. UKZN kept fighting, as Nhlakanipho Bithelezi scored with France slotted another penalty, before adding a stunning drop goal to keep the visitors in touch at 37-34. Faviers sealed the deal with a late try under the posts, with Kama’s conversion securing the 41-37 win.   SCORERS FNB SPU 41 (22): Tries:  Tumelo Papane, Jan Potgieter, Liyabona Maplanga, Jaiden Faviers 2.   FNB UKZN 37 (20): Tries:  Jordan Ramsamy, Wela-Aphumelele Takata, Zak Smith, Nhlakanipho Buthelezi.   FNB Player That Rocks: Khanya Kama (SPU)   TEAMS: SPU: Aviwe Mpopo, Jan Potgieter, Cassie Botes, Kwando Dlamini, Tumelo Papane, Tyrone China, Sello Maketlo (Captain), Gareth Maree, Ethen Manus, Leslie Ruiters, Raees Sahabodien, Khanya Kama, Jayden Faviers (Vice/Captain), Liyabona Maplanga, Bokamoso Maphisa. FNB Varsity College 40-14 FNB Madibaz It was a game of vengeance on the books as the visiting team FNB Madibaz had a score to settle with the team that knocked them out in last year's semi finals. The home team, FNB Varsity College, drew first blood after 11 minutes as they managed to wrestle a good try from a line-out drill, one of the star players in the team, vice-captain, Jacques Marais was at the end of the try. Fly-half, Frederick Marx hit the woodwork and failed to convert. 5-0 to FNB Varsity College. The match was a very physical end-to-end as both teams cancelled each other out to keep the scoreboard unmoved. The FNB Comets got another try in as the defensive work of Madibaz was again broken down when Marx offloaded a beautiful assist to Chandler Green who went over the line out wide. The fly-half converted successfully the second time out. The men from PE marked their presence in the match some minutes from the break as Sean Van Zijl caught the defense of the home team unaware running over a try, fly-half Conrad Raashied his teammate converting from a close range. The match went to the end of the first stanza with Varsity College leading 12-7. The home team didn’t waste any time into the second half as an entertaining full sprint from their eighth-man Johnathan Horak extended their lead fly-half making sure the score extended further to 19-7. Madibaz scored their second and final try through Kyle Erasmus who gave the away team a glimpse of hope to move his team into 14 points. It was a stream of tries then onwards from the Comets as Daniel Van Huizen, captain Abanye Mthembu and Jacques Marais all added points to complete the slaughter of the men from Madibaz. UWC picked up where they left off in the first half with persistent pressure on the WSU tryline. Tight head prop Keanuh Michaels goes over after a smart pick up and drive. Replacement UWC loose forward Danston Cloete scores with his first touch of the match. A rampaging five metre scrum sees Cloete pick up and dot the ball down. Outside centre J'que Huckins gets his second try of the evening. WSU try to attack from their own tryline but a loose pass is intercepted by the nimble Huckins who goes over untouched. • Players to watch in FNB Varsity Shield 2025

With the 2025 season of FNB Varsity Shield kicking off we take a look at this seasons players to watch and whose previous performances showcased their potential. Here is our selection for the players we think will be taking it to the next level and play a key role in their teams success. Frederick Marx  (FNB Varsity College) The Comets had an incredible debut season in 2024 reaching the final on their first attempt and  flyhalf Frederick Marx player a huge part in their success. The Glenwood old boy was their top points scorer and was nominated for the Suzuki Rookie of the Year award for his performances. Kyle Erasmus (FNB Madibaz) The Madibaz captain and hooker was their top scorer dotting down 8 times during the 2024 campaign. He will no doubt be at the back of the lineout driving mauls with ball in hand, but you can also find him out wide on the overlap. Siso France (FNB UKZN) The former Kearsney College boy, who made his home debut in the KZN derby against FNB Varsity College last year had such a big impact for the Impi that he was nominated for Suzuki Rookie of the Year. With more experience and maturity you can expect him to shine in his second season. Conwill Conradie (FNB UWC) The UWC scrummie was instrumental in marshalling the team to win the FNB Varsity Shield tournament in 2023. He was also named as the overall FNB Player of the Tournament that year. The Cape side struggled to find form last year in the Cup competition and were relegated, but expect Conradie to play a crucial role in the Shield competition if they are going to lift the trophy once again. Iwaan Bloys (FNB CPUT) The big centre has been a stalwart for the Tekkies since 2022 and you can be sure that he will using his speed and strength to break the line when CPUT are on attack and marshall the backline on defence. Sinalo Jivana (FNB UFH)   The Fort Hare speedster looked promising last season and this year will be starting at flyhalf for the Blues. Look out for him to add pace and vision in the midfield and be on the scoresheet consistently if the Eastern Cape side are live up to expectations. Zixesha Mangaliso (FNB WSU) Top try scorer for the WSU All Black last season. The hooker was a force behind the WSU driving maul which they used to great effect to reach the semi-finals. Keep an eye out for Zixesha to0 feature heavily again this year. We can't wait to see how the season plays out and which players will raise their hands and demand recognition. • UJ Orange Army eyes stronger start in FNB Varsity Cup 2025

After narrowly avoiding the relegation playoffs and finishing 6th in the 2024 FNB Varsity Cup campaign, FNB UJ will look to avoid the same mistakes in this year’s offering. The Orange Army showed moments of brilliance and scored some of the season's most memorable tries, but struggled to close out games they were controlling. The Orange Army have a mounting challenge in their opening match, facing CUT Ixias in vengeance from last year’s 23-19 loss in the round-robin phase.   “Its definitely going to be a tough one. For our opening game, we would be on the road, but for the first time in three years we will be getting an opportunity to start at home,” said Jonathan Mokuena, head coach of FNB UJ.   This shift in the team's schedule presents a unique chance to set the tone for the season.   However, the road to success has not been without setbacks. Mokuena acknowledged the loss of 10 players due to academic failures, a setback that added a layer of complexity to their preparations.   “I have lost 10 guys due to failing their exams. That was a bit of a bummer, but all universities are struggling with that,” Mokuena explained.   “These are all players that have been played nicely over their last two seasons, and this is their opportunity to try.”   Looking ahead, Mokuena stressed the importance of mental strength in overcoming these challenges.   “The big thing for me is the mental aspect. If you look at our scrum and lineout, I don’t think it was bad, it’s just that at times the focus wasn’t there,” he said.   This recognition of the team's mental fortitude as a key factor for success led Mokuena to take proactive steps in addressing this weakness.   “We brought in a mental coach, someone who has worked with NFL teams in the US,” Mokuena revealed.   Provisional squad (subject to change): Adriano Jackson, Alzeadon Felix, Angelo Dube, Asemahle Mafenyana, Berwyn Bosch, Bian Janse van Resnberg, Damian Bakker, Dylan Viljoen Flank, Francios Prinsloo, Gidaan Hurter, Gumi Leshoro, Jarred Jordaan, Jayden Ballie, Jayden Pringle, John Ford, Joshua Du Toit, Kamo Molefe, Liam Rowan, Marnus Swarts, Melusi Sibiya, Mihle  Matinise, Muzuva Gutu, Niel Hensen, Oela Blaawu, Reon Pretorious, Ruven Ferreira, Ryan Marimo, Sfiso Dlamini, Sibahle Phangela, Siyasanga Ali Gqaza, Siyemukela Ndlovu, Walter Moyo, Zian Cilliers.   Fixtures:  HERE   Tickets:  HERE     By: Karabo Peter

Varsity Cup Varsity Shield Young Guns Varsity Cup Women Tickets Teams Fan Zone News Videos Photo Gallery About © 2023 Varsity Cup. All rights reserved | Privacy Policy Privacy Policy Terms & Conditions | VC Way | 20 Oct 2022 FNB Varsity Cup unique rules and laws While the FNB Varsity Cup abides by the rules and regulations of the sport as determined by SA Rugby and World Rugby, the prestigious competition continues to lead the way in terms of rugby law innovation to improve the game. INNOVATION TO INCREASE BALL IN PLAY TIME A new law innovation in 2023 to add more ball in playtime. • Conversion kicks must be taken within 60 seconds after a try has been scored, if the kick is not taken in 60 seconds, then the team forfeits the opportunity/points. • Once the conversion is taken, time will be stopped and will only restart once the kick-off takes place. • When a penalty try is awarded, time will stop when the try is awarded and restarted with the kick-off With an average of 8 tries per match, this could potentially add an additional 2.5 minutes to ball in play time POINT OF ORIGIN TRY (POR) In this season of Varsity Cup, a team can gain additional bonus points upon scoring a try from their own half. • Team gained possession inside their own half that scores a try without conceding possession of the ball: Try worth 7 points - (5pts plus 2 bonus points) *The Varsity Shield tournament DOES NOT use the point of origin try rule and a try from anywhere on the field remains 5 points. 50/22 LAW VARIATION A team in possession that kicks the ball indirectly into touch from inside his 50m gets a free kick 15m in from touch. That team may not take a scrum or lineout, they must take a tap kick. If that team scores from there, the try value will be 5 points. There is no requirement for a set phase inside your own half. A team may carry the ball back and kick it indirectly into touch inside the opposition’s half. If a team scores from the tap, the try value will be 5 points. FREE KICK LAW FOR CATCH FROM AIR Any catch from any kick from the air (except from a kick for the start or restart of the match) means a free kick for the receiver right away. The receiver/defender doesn’t have to call anything. The referee will play advantage, and have the ability to bring the play back to the point where the catch was made if the advantage has not been used and to award a free kick to the receiver’s team. The receiver however does have the right to call a free kick like any other free kick in the 22, and to use it as such. Thus, it is exactly the same as a free kick in the 22 just extended to the rest of the field. The mark law for the 22 stays the same. The free-kick is named a FREE CATCH . DEFENDING SCRUMHALF Law : The “defending 9’s” offside line is limited to the tunnel where the shoulders of the opposing props meet. Sanction : Penalty Kick Aim : To create more time and space for the “attacking 9” to clear the ball at the base of a scrum. Current Application: Currently the law allows the “defending 9” to follow but remain behind the ball as it is hooked in a scrum. He must also stay within 1m of the scrum. The “defending 9” may also retire to the hindmost foot of his teammate where he may then move further than 1m from the scrum. Lastly, he may retire to the backline, 5m away. He may not return to the offside line from which he has retired. RED CARD RULE The Red Card Rule will work as follows: If a red card is given to a player of a team: - • That team will play for 15 minutes with one less player, the player given the red card will go off the field. • After 15 minutes another player may go back on to the pitch, but not the player who was awarded the red card. The main intention of this rule change is to the contest stays alive amidst an early game red card. WHITE CARD The White Card will be used in the televised semi-finals and final of Varsity Cup only. · The Team Coach or Captain can, during a stoppage in play, request the referee to review a decision they believe to be incorrect OR request him to review a possible infringement that went undetected and required an appropriate sanction. SCRUMMING LAW The process for the scrum is the current sequence released by World Rugby for all competitions. STRATEGY BREAKS One strategy break per half for three minutes, between the 18th and 22nd minutes of matches, will be allowed. The strategy break only occurs in the FNB Varsity Cup, FNB Varsity Shield and FNB Young Guns competitions. NUMBER OF PLAYERS Every team must have 23 players in their match-day squad and must have two props and a hooker on the bench. The team that causes uncontested scrums must finish the game with 14 players. Front-row players must be replaced with other front-row players. COMPETITION RULES – POINTS VALUE Try: 5 points Drop goal: 3 points Penalty goal: 3 points Conversion: 2 points Point of origin tries: 7 points LOG POINTS CALCULATION 4 points for A WIN 2 points for A DRAW 0 points for A LOSS One bonus point for losing within seven or fewer points. One bonus point for four tries or more. The maximum points a team can receive in a match are therefore five. FIXTURE FORFEITURE In the event of a default or where a team has forfeited the fixture, the offending team loses 28-0 and the non-offending team will receive maximum log points (5).
