- Tuks crowned FNB Varsity Shield champions after crushing Varsity College
Scoring 15 tries to three, FNB UP-Tuks ran rampant and beat FNB Varsity College 95-21 in the final of the 2024 FNB Varsity Shield in Pretoria to add yet another trophy to their cabinet. The new champions finished the season unbeaten and will return to the FNB Varsity Cup next year. Playing at home, with the clear objective of a spotless campaign and to be crowned the champions, the Stripe Generation opened the scoring through captain Ethan Burger. The rest of the first half was a one-sided affair with more tries by Kamohelo Tlome, Cayno February, Henry Till and Marco Venter. Five minutes before the break, the home team were leading 38-0. Varsity College finally registered points on the board on the stroke of half-time through flyhalf Frederick Marx who dotted down and converted his own try, the score 38-7 at the break. Tuks came back and continued their demolishing act on their opponents who didn’t have any answers to the onslaught. Bayanda Ngubane was the first to cross the try line with Ambesa Zenzile shortly following. Varsity College then pulled one back through Benjamin Field while Michael Horak also managed a five-pointer for his team. Then it was more of the same from the Stripe Generation with Kyle Cyster scoring a brace as well as tries by Ruan van Blommestein, Haydn Kemp, Jacobus Louw and Tharquinn Manuel. - UFH dethrone Maties to lift Varsity Cup for women
FNB UFH rocked Pretoria when they dethroned defending champions FNB Maties to be crowned the 2024 FNB Varsity Cup Women’s champions, beating the Maroon Machine 37-31 in a pulsating final at the Tuks Stadium. The Eastern Cape ladies put their hands up early in the match when Sivuyiseko Makhomazi broke the Maties’ defence with a sensational run from inside her own half and offloaded to Purity Ngogodo who easily flew over the try line. Maties were then reduced to 14 players when Zelmari Pretorius was sent to the sin bin for a high tackle. UFH dominated the period and were awarded a try when scrumhalf Sindisiwe Mbonja sneaked past her opponents. They proved relentless as they scored another point-of-origin try with a brilliant run from Etandwa Marawu. Maties started fighting back to remain in contention and were awarded a try when Elme Kruge powered over and converted her own try. UFH led 25-7 at half-time The team talk in the Maties dressing must have been intense as Johann Zeier’s troops returned from the break with a try, in the form of Kruger completing her brace. UFH however hit back with another try from Mbonja. It remained an intense clash with Maties scoring back-to-back tries through Ankia Viljeon and Zelmari Pretorius that reduced the deficit to just six points. Zintle Mkhokheli then dotted down for UFH before Kruger secured her hat-trick for Maties with five minutes to left play. It was however too late with UFH triumphantly claiming the 2024 title. - It’s Tuks against Varsity College in Varsity Shield final
All roads lead to Pretoria on Friday 26 April as FNB UP-Tuks will host FNB Varsity College in the 2024 FNB Varsity Shield final. The Stripe Generation showed no mercy in beating FNB WSU while debutants Varsity Shield scored an impressive come-from-behind victory over FNB Madibaz. FNB UP-TUKS 80 – 14 FNB WSU FNB UP-Tuks thrashed FNB WSU 80-14 in their semi-final encounter in Pretoria to remain the only unbeaten side in this year’s Varsity Shield. The Stripe Generation opened the scoring through a try by Henry Till and it didn’t take long for Johannes Mare to score the first of his two five-pointers. The onslaught continued in the one-sided affair as Tuks stretched their lead through fancy pieces of counterattacks. First, it was scrumhalf Chad-Lee Valentine who dummied over the line before Kobus Janse van Rensburg produced a cheeky piece of individual play beating two defenders. Kyle Cyster added his name to the scoresheet on the stroke of halftime. Walter Visser made no mistake from the tee converting all conversions as Tuks took a dominant 35-0 lead at the interval. The home team returned from the break and were awarded a penalty try followed by a try through Juandre Jooste. WSU then lit up somewhat, breaking through the Tuks defence. The result was back-to-back converted tries from Sandisiwe Mkwayimba and Sinethemba Zwelonke. Tuks however weren’t done yet and went on to score six more tries before the final whistle. Janse van Rensburg and Marais completed their brace while skipper Ethan Burger joined the party. Bayanda Ngubane spent most of the match deep in defence and finally broke away in a give-and-go with Cayno February. Substitute Jacobus Louw powered over the try-line to close out the match in emphatic fashion. SCORERS FNB UP-Tuks 80 (35) – Tries: Henry Till, Johannes Mare (2), Kobus Janse van Rensburg (2), Chad-Lee Valentine, Kyle Cyster, Penalty Try, Juandre Jooste, Ethan Burger, Bayande Ngubane, Jacobus Louw. FNB VARSITY COLLEGE 24 – 20 FNB MADIBAZ If ever there was a game of two halves, the semi-final clash between FNB Madibaz and FNB Varsity College in Gqeberha was it. The debutants from Durban managed to turn around a 14-point deficit at half-time in a 24-20 victory over the more fancied Eastern Cape opponents. With a 17-3 lead at the break, few would have bet against Madibaz marching towards the Varsity Shield final. Varsity College had other ideas though. Despite losing their talisman flyhalf Frederick Marx to a red card, they rallied back to score 21 points in the second stanza. There were also huge performances from their back three and the introduction of man-mountain Sonwabo Maseko proved a game-changer in their qualification for the final in their first year in the competition. It was heartbreak for the men from Gqeberha, but they still have the chance to play in the FNB Varsity Cup rugby next year. That all depends on the outcome of their promotion-relegation clash against FNB CUT on 2 May. SCORERS FNB Varsity College 24 (3) – Tries: Sonwaso Maseko, Nkazimulo Mzolo, Nathi Ntuli. - CUT working with the Pontem Developmental Centre in ShowUs campaign
NEXT PREVIOUS CSI 13 Mar 2024 #ShowUs – CUT proud to be associated with Pontem Developmental Centre FNB CUT Ixias are delighted to once again be working with the Pontem Developmental Centre as their #ShowUs initiative for the 2024 FNB Varsity Cup season. Pontem is a school for kids with autism and through their campaign, the players get to work and have fun with these truly remarkable children. Research shows that approximately 2% of South Africans are affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It has been proven that it can be managed and sport can play a major role beyond physical fitness. One of the most significant benefits is improved confidence and self-esteem. Ixias vice-captain Bernard Venter says being able to work with Pontem again is truly rewarding and they are nothing but proud to be associated with the centre. “We at CUT Ixias are proud to be seen as role models and pride ourselves on trying to set a good example for others,” says the younger brother of the Edinburg prop, Boan Venter, who also represented the Ixias. “We love working with the kids and being informed and exposed to children with autism as it reminds us of all we have to be thankful for. It allows us to see that autism is truly a very misunderstood condition. “These children are very kind, fun-loving and intelligent and it is a very satisfying experience to be able to work with them and to have a positive influence on their lives. “It warms our hearts to see the smiles on their faces just because we get to spend some time and play some games with them. “We are also in the process of expanding the outreach program in the Bloemfontein community and making a more sustainable support system for the autistic people and would love to raise more awareness with regards to their condition.” BACK FAN ZONE VIEW ALL VIEW ALL #ShowUs – Tuks want to grow Help Hungry Students initiative 23 April 2022 READ CSI #ShowUs – Madibaz Rugby Schools Engagement Programme looking for new talent 23 April 2022 READ CSI #ShowUs – Maties help Mandela Daycare Centre achieve its goals 23 April 2022 READ CSI Varsity Cup Varsity Shield Young Guns Varsity Cup Women Tickets Teams Fan Zone News Videos Photo Gallery About © 2023 Varsity Cup.
