  • FNB UWC sticking to its game plan against tough opposition

“If you told me in November 2022 that we would be unbeaten after five games in 2023, I would have taken that, no questions asked.” This was the reflection of FNB UWC director of rugby Paul Treu after their 31-10 victory over two-time champions FNB CPUT last week. UWC are top of the Varsity Shield log, three points clear of second-placed FNB Madibaz. The 2023 Varsity Shield champions will gain automatic promotion to the 2024 Varsity Cup competition, while the second-placed side will be locked in a promotion-relegation battle against the second-last side in the Varsity Cup. At the moment, that is FNB UJ. While the scoreboard indicated a comfortable win for UWC, Treu warns against his charges becoming too complacent. “The first 20 minutes of most games are usually where teams sum each other up, as was the case against CPUT. Many times, as a coach, you think your tactic will work but when it doesn't you have to be able to adapt. “As coaches, we can only bring about changes to our plan if the players are playing according to this plan. We played in areas where we shouldn't have, and we conceded penalties in areas where we shouldn't.” Against CPUT, Treu's charges made 180 tackles, a number that is astronomical at this level of rugby, with these numbers usually found in the United Rugby Championship. A player like Mauritz Swart made 37 tackles and missed none. Treu says the plan is always to neutralise their opponents’ strengths and play to their own, as they did against CPUT. “Their kicking and running game is phenomenal. We adapted very quickly and in the moments where CPUT lapsed in concentration, we pounced and converted this into points.” by Lyndon Julius

  • Bester brotherly rivalry in Free State

A brotherly rivalry on a rugby field is always something special. No wonder FNB CUT Ixias centre Zachery Bester is relishing the prospect of facing younger brother Zane Bester, wearing the FNB UFS Shimlas jersey, for the first time in the FNB Varsity Cup when the two teams take to the field on Monday 27 March in Bloemfontein. It is a very elite club indeed, with the Sango (FNB UP-Tuks) and Siba (FNB Maties) Xamlashe being the last pair in 2022. They have since both moved on to join the Griquas and Cheetahs respectively. The Bester brothers played together for Hoërskool Jim Fouché in Bloemfontein where they formed the midfield combination and this was the start of their special rivalry. Zachery says that while he loves his brother dearly, he cannot wait to play against Zane on Monday. “The brother rivalry is coming soon and it's going to be nice. We are very close and love each other a lot, but it will be good to see who the better player is. “There are all of those stories of brothers playing against each other, but we are not your typical brothers. The Besters have also always made a mark since school as we played together. I played inside centre, and he played outside centre and together we made a lot of good plays. “I just want to say good luck to the Shimlas, we need them to go through. Let's have a Bloemfontein semi-final. “To my team, just stay humble, we've got what it takes. Just carry on doing what coach Melusi (Mthethwa) tells us and just keep ticking the boxes. “So far that Varsity Cup has been an amazing experience for me, and every time I play a game I smile, no matter the outcome. A smile just makes the game so much better. It's fast and I'm not going to lie about that. “All the best to my brother. He is doing well for himself so far, he just shouldn't give up.”

  • FNB Varsity Shield: Round 6 teams (Thursday 23 March)

With FNB UWC the only unbeaten team in the 2023 FNB Varsity Shield and virtually secured of a home semi-final in a couple of weeks, the fight is on between four teams for the remaining three spots. Log leaders FNB UWC are hosting FNB UKZN in Cape Town and will want to make it six in a row in their march to the playoffs. UKZN on the other hand have only won once. An interesting match-up awaits between Eastern Cape rivals FNB Madibaz and defending champions FNB UFH. Madibaz is currently second on the log while UFH occupies the fourth spot and must win to stay in contention. FNB TUT would want to upset the applecart against FNB CPUT in Pretoria. A victory by 5th-placed TUT over 3rd-placed CPUT will keep their semi-final hopes alive. Pride is on offer when FNB Rhodes and FNB WSU take to the field in Makhanda as both are at the bottom of the log. The home team is still looking for a victory while the visitors have only managed one win in 2023. • FNB Varsity Cup: Players who impressed (Round 5)

The 2023 FNB Varsity Cup has reached the business end of proceedings and at this stage, it looks like FNB NWU Eagles and FNB Maties are on their way to hosting a semi-final each. Who they’ll be playing against, is still up for the taking as only three points are separating the next four teams on the log. Here are our standout players from round 5. Grant de Jager (FNB Maties) While Maties are brimming with confidence, FNB UP-Tuks are in the doldrums with the defending champions now out of the 2023 title race. Outside centre Grant de Jager, who received the Player That Rocks award, was on fire in the middle of the field. His attacking abilities led to a point-of-origin try after a 70-metre run down the field. Matthew Fortuin (FNB NWU Eagles) The Eagles took a big step towards reaching the playoffs for this year’s Varsity Cup, in part thanks to an inspirational performance by Matthew Fortuin against FNB CUT. The inside centre was lethal on attack and was rewarded with two well-crafted tries. Jooste Nel (FNB UFS Shimlas) After being expected to be on the sideline for the entire season, Jooste Nel returned to the field to put in a stellar performance against FNB UJ. Had the big Shimlas centre crossed the whitewash he would certainly have been named the Player That Rocks. He had strong ball carries, and he was also good in contact situations. Ntokozo Makhaza (FNB UCT Ikeys) In a comprehensive victory over FNB Wits, Ikeys’ Ntokozo Makhaza was a standout. The winger was a thorn in the opposition’s side with his contribution of a try and five conversions, for a total points tally of 15. No wonder he felt extremely proud of his performance, saying afterwards that “my goal is to make it to the professional level”.

  • MATCHDAY 5 WRAP: Maties, Eagles march on; UCT, Shimlas still in it

FNB MATIES 46 FNB UP-TUKS 35 FNB Maties warded off a second-half comeback by FNB UP-Tuks to record a 46-35 victory in Stellenbosch, thus ending the defending champions’ hope of making it to the semi-finals of this year’s competition. It was their fifth consecutive defeat in 2023. An early try by inside centre Waqar Solaan gave Maties a 7-0 lead after flyhalf and captain Jurie Matthee added the extras. The visitors struck back courtesy of a score by hooker Allister Williams and drew level after number 10 Walter Visser, brother of Springbok Sevens player Impi Visser, converted the try. Matthee added another penalty before outside centre Grant de Jager intercepted a pass to run 70 metres for a point-of-origin try which made it 19-7. Matthee kept the scoreboard pressure with a conversion and a penalty to consolidate Maties’ hold on the match. Wing Matthew Van Schalkwyk rounded off some superb interplay with De Jager and fullback Cade Croy for his try. Matthee’s conversion took the halftime score to 31-7 with the hosts looking to extract a measure of revenge for last year’s final loss against the visitors. The second half was ignited with a moment of magic when Jacques Rousseau danced his way past the Tuks defenders to score in the corner for Maties. There was a glimmer of hope for the defending champions when Zander Reynders, Zandre Kruger and Visser crossed the try-line. A penalty by Matthee and a late try by lock Simon Miller however extinguished any hopes of a victory for the visitors. Tuks had one last through of the dice with a consolation try by Bayanda Ngubane but it was a case of too little, too late. FNB NWU EAGLES 45 FNB CUT 28 FNB NWU Eagles maintained their position at the top of the log following a hard-fought 45-28 victory against FNB CUT at the Fanie du Toit Sportsground. Matthew Fortuin scored a brace of tries for the Eagles to continue their fine start to the campaign. The Eagles, who were led by Vernon Paulo in the absence of Riaan Genis, took a 23-12 halftime lead following tries from Ntobeko Shezi, Vernon Paulo and Matthee Fortuin, with Zinedine Robinson successful with the conversions to give the home team the advantage. CUT responded with tries from Jacobus Cloete and Jandre de Beer. The Eagles continued with their brilliant start to the game in the second half when Fortuin got his second try of the night to make it 32-12. CUT had to replace Ricoman Titus following an arm injury ten minutes into the second half, with Zac Bester coming on. The visitors fought back with a try from Asekho Marubela and Matthew Sekele to try and make a comeback. A brilliant try from Aphelele Madaka however secured the win for NWU while CUT slipped from second to fourth on the log FNB NWU Eagles 45 (23) – Tries: Ntobeko Shezi, Vernon Paulo, Aphelele Madaka, Matthew Fortuin (2). FNB UCT IKEYS 46 FNB WITS 19 What started as a gutsy encounter at a cold Green Mile Stadion in Cape Town, saw FNB UCT Ikeys demolish FNB Wits 46-19. The Tigers laid the ground rules early on by showing positive intent with the ball in hand. Centre Tom Nell scored from a turnover with Ntokozo Makhaza successfully converting. It didn't take long before Wits responded with a seven-pointer try courtesy of full-back Setshaba Mokoena. However, tries by Sipho Dyonase, Makhaza and Duran Koevort put the home side 34-7 in front at halftime. The second half started on a high with the visitors trying to catch up when Azakhiwe Afrika crossed the try-line. UCT punched back with a try through Enos Ndiao, whose all-round play earned him the Player That Rocks award. Wits showed hunger as Mark Synman added to the scoresheet with Gerswin Mouton adding the conversion. Tom Dawson-Squibb’s charges were not done as substitute Rihaz Fredericks registered his name to the scoreboard with a try for a well-deserved victory. FNB UCT 46 (34) – Tries: Tom Nell, Sipho Dyonase, Ntokozo Makhaza, Duran Koevort, Enos Ndiao, Rihaz Fredericks. FNB UFS SHIMLAS 31 FNB UJ 30 FNB UFS Shimlas fought to the bitter end to edge out FNB UJ 31-30 in a humdinger in Bloemfontein. The match at Shimla Park had a lot of drama, including lights going out due to a total blackout in the City of Roses some 19 minutes into the game. UJ opened the scoring with flanker Christiaan Pretorius going over for the first of his two tries, while Rowan Malgas converted. Minutes later, Shimlas struck back with hooker William Moffat dotting down with the try being converted by Litha Nkula. Pretorius went over again to complete his brace, but once again the home side struck back immediately when Nkula flew over for his try. And then the lights went out. After a couple of minutes in the darkness, the generators kicked in and the game resumed while the entire city was still in the dark. With four minutes to play before the halftime break, Shimlas’ Siviwe Zondani scored the first of his two tries to hand his team a 23-14 lead at the break. Ten minutes into the second period, Zondani completed his brace for the evening, but this time Nkula couldn’t add the extra two. He did however land a penalty which proved to be vital. Tries by Prince Nkabinde and Kelvin Kanenungo for UJ made it a one-point game with 5 minutes to play. After the hooter, UJ were in for a chance with a 5-metre lineout, but they were penalised for holding the ball on the ground. • FNB Varsity Cup Women: Maties beat UKZN to advance to semi-final In the first-ever FNB Varsity

In the first-ever FNB Varsity Cup Women’s match, FNB Maties scored 11 tries en route to a 63-5 demolition of visiting FNB UKZN in Stellenbosch. They will now take on FNB UFH in the one semi-final on Thursday 6 April while FNB UP-Tuks and FNB UJ will contest the other semi-final on Monday 3 April. The final is set for Thursday 13 April. It didn’t take long for Maties to open their account as fullback Danelle van Zyl scored two quick tries. UKZN then kept the ball tight for a few phases and captain Nomonde Hope Mbanjwa forced her way over the try line to narrow the gap. Unfortunately for the visitors from Durban, this seemed to spur on the Maroon Machine as tighthead Janke Oosthuizen channelled her inner Richard Bands as she ran beautifully down the touchline to score in the corner. Maties then began shifting gears, playing with more composure and increasing the pressure on the UKZN defence. The fourth try was courtesy of winger Kayleen Muggels, who rounded off a superb passage of play in which nearly the whole team handled the ball at some stage. The rest of the half went past in a bit of a lull before Ropah Madyah showed her skills and pace to score to make the halftime score 27-5 for the hosts. The second half was a breathless affair with Madyah going over for her brace courtesy of a great pass from her centre partner Augustyn. Maties flyhalf Lara Schats sold a dummy on her way to her try before Elme Kruger ran the length of the field to score under the posts, converting her try. Van Zyl grabbed her hat trick and even managed to add a fourth try after the strategy break with Madyah also earning a hattrick courtesy of a massive handoff on the way to her superb score. Kruger was deservedly awarded the Player That Rocks and was a standout player, magnificently assisted by her centres Augustyn and Madyah. FNB MATIES 63 (27)– Tries: Danelle van Zyl (4), Ropah Madyah (3), Janke Oosthuizen, Kayleen Muggels, Elme Kruger, Lara Schats. Conversions: Kruger (4). FNB UKZN 5 (5) – Tries: Nomonde Hope Mbanjwa. • FNB Varsity Cup: Round 5 teams (Monday 20 March)

With only four rounds remaining in the 2023 FNB Varsity Cup, interesting permutations are emerging as to who will advance to the playoffs in a couple of weeks. An exciting matchup awaits between FNB NWU Eagles and FNB CUT in Potchefstroom with just two points separating them at the top of the log. Both teams have a chance to stake their claim for a home semi-final in three weeks. It is a must-win for FNB UP-Tuks as they travel to Stellenbosch to face FNB Maties. The defending champions are languishing at the bottom of the log without any wins while the Maroon Machine sits comfortably in third position. • FNB Varsity Shield: Players who impressed (Round 5)

With just three rounds remaining before the all-important semi-finals of the 2023 FNB Varsity Shield, there is a clear picture of which teams likely will make it through. FNB UWC remains unbeaten while FNB Madibaz and FNB CPUT have just lost one match each. Defending champions FNB UFH and FNB TUT are also still in with a chance. Here are our standout players from round 5. Mauritz Swart (FNB UWC) The take-no-prisoners attitude of the UWC hooker made an impact with the ball in hand, keeping the FNB CPUT defenders busy. His defence also couldn’t be faulted. Swart played a pivotal role in the build-up to his team’s first try which led to them seizing the momentum for two tries in quick succession. Ayabulela Xhosana (FNB UFH) It took a while, but the defending champions finally have their season on track and the comprehensive victory over FNB UKZN came at just the right time. The UFH eight-man was a standout in all facets of play. Not only did Xhosana score a try, but he was also named the FNB Player That Rocks. Khakalethu Bophi (FNB Madibaz) Madibaz took a massive step towards their goal of winning this year’s Varsity Shield running in ten tries against a hapless FNB Rhodes. Two of those belonged to Bophi who was simply in sublime form. The fleet-footed winger’s field positioning was excellent, and his attacking play was deadly. Lithemba Ncithane (FNB WSU) With WSU already out of the running for this year’s playoffs, the victory over TUT was a small consolation. But they had to wait till the last minutes of the match to get the win. Ncithane’s tenacity and never-say-die attitude led to a very important try to seal the deal and his team’s first win in the competition.

With the 2023 FNB Varsity Cup and FNB Varsity Shield nearing the semi-finals, it is time for the ladies to join the action in the inaugural FNB Varsity Cup Women. Said FNB Varsity Cup founder Francois Pienaar at the start of this year’s competition “As one of the fastest growing team sports around the world, we are proud to ignite women’s rugby at university level in South Africa.” The five teams taking part this year are FNB Maties, FNB UP-Tuks, FNB UJ, FNB UKZN and FNB UFH. Maties and UKZN face off in a knockout match in Stellenbosch on Monday 20 March to determine who will go through to take on UFH in the semi-final on Thursday 6 April. UP-Tuks and UJ are contesting the other semi-final in Pretoria on Monday 3 April. The final is set for Thursday 13 April. Maties coach Johann Zeier says his team are very excited to play in the first-ever Varsity Cup for women. “We've done everything we can to be as prepared as possible. All we want for the ladies is to enjoy the occasion and represent themselves, their families and Stellenbosch University in the best way possible. “I think the competition will be a valuable contribution to women's rugby in South Africa. I am looking forward to seeing it grow into a competition with more teams and games, as well as a Women's Shield competition eventually.” UJ coach Bongiwe Nhleko says they will make their participation in the competition count. “I am very much excited about the tournament, it is a great platform and exposure for women in Varsity rugby. As UJ, we are honoured to be involved in the history of the first-ever Varsity Cup for women. We pray we’ll make it count.” UFH coach Ntyatyambo Mkhafu says they appreciate the opportunity as it will be a fantastic experience and exposure for women's rugby. “It will also give the young girls hope that even if they do not make the provincial team, they can still study and play rugby, and who knows, maybe they will be noticed by national coaches and be chosen. Also, because it will be visible to everyone, we may see more women join rugby in the coming years. We hope that there will be more teams joining next year.” Fixtures HERE.

  • FNB Varsity Shield: Round 5 teams (Thursday 16 March)

After tomorrow’s matches, there are only three rounds left in the 2023 FNB Varsity Shield that’ll determine the top four teams to contest the semi-finals. Just three points separate the top three teams and there is a lot to play for. The Cape Town derby between FNB CPUT and FNB UWC is undoubtedly the pick of the action tomorrow. They are the only two unbeaten teams this year with UWC at the top of the log courtesy of a bonus point. Occupying the third spot on the log, FNB Madibaz is up against FNB Rhodes in Makhanda. The men from Gqeberha have collected five bonus points, the most so far, while Rhodes is languishing at the bottom of the log on zero points. Defending champions FNB UFH travels to Durban to face FNB UKZN. After a slow start in 2023, they will be keen to stake their claim for a playoff spot against a team below them on the log. It is an away game in Mdantsane for FNB TUT against FNB WSU. The Pretoria-based team have a semi-final berth in sight while WSU has yet to win a game. • FNB Varsity Cup: Players who impressed (Round 4)

With four rounds left in the 2023 FNB Varsity Cup, a picture is beginning to emerge of the possible semi-final contenders. And it doesn’t look like defending champions FNB UP-Tuks will be in the mix after their fourth consecutive loss. Here are our standout players from round 4. Tino Swanepoel (FNB NWU Eagles) The Eagles are still sitting comfortably at the top of the log after sending Tuks packing. Swanepoel was in the thick of things for NWU with two tries and also played an integral part in his team’s defence. The fullback’s overall contribution was recognised with the Player That Rocks award. Grant de Jager (FNB Maties) For a while it looked like a certain victory over FNB Wits might be slipping from their hands, but Maties managed to pull it through in the end. De Jager combined well with his centre partner and his all-round performance was impressive too. He looked threatening every time he had the ball, resulting in a try and the award for the Player That Rocks. Kwezi Dlamini (FNB UFS Shimlas) It may not have been the result Shimlas wanted against FNB UCT, but the visitors nonetheless gave it their all in front of the Ikeys Tigers crowd. Dlamini stood tall in defence for the Free State team, putting in more than his fair share of vital tackles. The number 8 also scored a try. Ricoman Titus (FNB CUT) It didn’t look like being on the road bothered Titus too much, as the CUT fullback was on fire against FNB UJ. In a game raining tries, Titus dotted down three times to contribute 15 points to his team’s victory. He was quick on the ball and played a big part in CUT dominating proceedings.

  • FNB Varsity Cup: Round 4 teams (Monday 13 March)

There is not much to choose between the top 5 teams at the halfway mark of the 2023 FNB Varsity Cup. With four weeks left till the semi-finals, it is still anyone’s game. Defending champions FNB UP-Tuks take to the field against FNB NWU Eagles in Pretoria knowing that they must win to have any hope of qualifying for the playoffs. Currently languishing at the bottom of the log without any wins, they are up against the team occupying the number one spot. An exciting matchup awaits between FNB Wits and FNB Maties in Johannesburg with just two points separating them on the log. Wits will want to stamp their authority as one of the title contenders while Maties are gaining momentum after a slow start to the tournament. Fresh from an upset victory over defending champions FNB UP-Tuks, FNB CUT travelled to Johannesburg to continue on their winning ways with an encounter against FNB UJ. The Orange Army are after their second win of the 2023 campaign. FNB UCT Ikeys play host to FNB UFS Shimlasin Cape Town and will be looking to move up the log where they currently occupy the 7th position. Shimlas will no doubt be out to improve on last week’s narrow one-point victory over FNB Wits.
