FNB CUT Ixias are delighted to once again be working with the Pontem Developmental Centre as their #ShowUs initiative for the 2024 FNB Varsity Cup season.

Pontem is a school for kids with autism and through their campaign, the players get to work and have fun with these truly remarkable children.

Research shows that approximately 2% of South Africans are affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It has been proven that it can be managed and sport can play a major role beyond physical fitness. One of the most significant benefits is improved confidence and self-esteem.

Ixias vice-captain Bernard Venter says being able to work with Pontem again is truly rewarding and they are nothing but proud to be associated with the centre.

“We at CUT Ixias are proud to be seen as role models and pride ourselves on trying to set a good example for others,” says the younger brother of the Edinburg prop, Boan Venter, who also represented the Ixias.

“We love working with the kids and being informed and exposed to children with autism as it reminds us of all we have to be thankful for. It allows us to see that autism is truly a very misunderstood condition.

“These children are very kind, fun-loving and intelligent and it is a very satisfying experience to be able to work with them and to have a positive influence on their lives.

“It warms our hearts to see the smiles on their faces just because we get to spend some time and play some games with them.

“We are also in the process of expanding the outreach program in the Bloemfontein community and making a more sustainable support system for the autistic people and would love to raise more awareness with regards to their condition.”
