SportPesa and UFS tackle gambling head-on with student awareness workshop

The University of the Free State (UFS), in partnership with SportPesa, recently hosted a Responsible Gambling Awareness Workshop on as part of the institution's broader Lekgotla Programme — a platform rooted in collective dialogue and student well-being.
Held at the Steve Biko Building on the Bloemfontein Campus, the three-hour session brought together students, mental health professionals, law enforcement, and industry representatives to confront a growing challenge on university campuses: problem gambling.
Gambling is increasingly visible in student life, manifesting through sports betting, online betting, and card games. Left unaddressed, it contributes to financial stress, anxiety, depression, and declining academic performance.
SportPesa's Compliance Consultant, Arumugam Consulting, walked students through practical responsible gambling tools — including self-exclusion options, cooling-off periods, and intervention triggers — while Managing Director Dean Delaney delivered opening remarks virtually.

HPCSA-registered counsellor Samuel Pillay explored the psychological dimension of gambling, unpacking dopamine-driven reward cycles and early warning signs of problem behaviour.
"Your life matters — be the hero who is always in control of it. Push yourself to achieve your academic goals," Pillay urged students. He was equally direct on the financial stakes: "You can never use the funding of your studies for gambling."
Representatives from the Free State Gambling, Liquor and Tourism Authority presented national statistics and support structures, and SAPS Captain Diresh Naidoo addressed the risks associated with illegal gambling operations.
The workshop forms part of a three-campus dialogue series — spanning the South, Bloemfontein, and Qwaqwa campuses — designed to equip students with the knowledge, tools, and support networks to make responsible choices.
The Lekgotla Programme reaffirms UFS's commitment to holistic student development: creating safe spaces where difficult conversations happen, stigma is reduced, and practical help is made accessible.
