#ShowUS - Varsity College community outreach with feeding programme Servings of Grace

With the 2024 FNB Varsity Shield well underway, the FNB Varsity College Comets recently paid a visit to Servings of Grace, a feeding programme in the Greenwood Park area of Durban.

The #ShowUs Campaign entrusts each university in the Cup and the Shield with a community engagement programme and for Varsity College helping Servings of Grace was a fitting initiative.

Servings of Grace, which was started by Angelique Watson in July 2023, operates out of the Greenwood Park Methodist Church in Blackburn Road and is responsible for feeding over 100 people every Saturday.

The programme goes beyond just a feeding scheme and offers the guests an opportunity to interact and create relationships with volunteers who welcome them each weekend.

Being able to lend a hand was a privilege for the Varsity College players. For IIE’s Varsity College sports manager Carole Adam the programme fits with what Varsity College stands for.

“The Varsity Cup #ShowUs campaign definitely mirrors the ethos of what our own VC Cares campus community engagement program is all about. Our recent visit was a humbling experience for our student-athletes who were able to engage and interact with the local impoverished community.

“It provided an opportunity for our students to give back to a community on their doorstep and for them to realize the small impact they made, can make a big difference in the lives of those community members.

“The contribution of the fridge, freezer and urn makes the campaign not just a once-off involvement but provides a long-term investment to Servings of Grace to manage the food kitchen and donations more effectively.”

During their visit, the players were responsible for delivering the food to the church in Blackburn Road and they were also responsible for distributing the food to the guests while they waited at their tables. The players were also encouraged to engage with the guests and form a part of the interaction element that Servings of Grace offers.
