FNB Varsity Cup & Shield 2026 National Launch Delivers High Energy Showcase at V&A Waterfront

The FNB Varsity Cup and FNB Varsity Shield 2026 season was officially launched with a vibrant event at a packed V&A Waterfront amphitheatre, setting the tone for another epic year of student rugby and what promises to be another unforgettable season.
Fans gathered in large numbers as the iconic Cape Town venue transformed into a celebration of rugby, entertainment, and campus culture. The launch brought together the captains of all three tournaments, who were formally introduced on stage alongside their university mascots.
The atmosphere was amplified by energetic cheerleader performances, while mascots and promoters moved through the crowd, engaging fans and handing out sponsor giveaways. Supporters were also treated to a taste of sponsor activations, creating an interactive experience throughout the event.
SuperSport presenter Cato Louw hosted interviews with the captains, giving fans insight into team expectations, leadership roles, and the excitement building ahead of the season which begins on 13 February for the Shield competition and the 16 February for the opening round of the Cup tournament. The live show blended broadcast-ready moments with crowd interaction, reinforcing the tournament’s “Who’s NXT?” narrative and spotlighting the next generation of rugby talent.
The launch also featured an explanation of the newly introduced Tap or Kick rule aimed at promoting attacking rugby by giving teams who score a try to go for the conventional conversion or opt for a tap on the 22m line where they will have 120 seconds to score another try and gain a further 5 points.
The countdown is over. The players are ready, the fans have spoken and the stage is set for the country to discover who will rise next.
