- Tuks destroy UKZN, Madibaz and Varsity College continue to build momentum
For the second week in a row, FNB UP-Tuks swept past their opponents when they thoroughly beat FNB UKZN in round five of the 2024 FNB Varsity Shield competition. FNB Madibaz had no problems in an away fixture against FNB TUT and FNB Varsity College won comfortably against FNB CPUT at home. In the Eastern Cape, FNB WSU won the battle of the neighbours against FNB UFH. FNB UP-TUKS 69 – 3 FNB UKZN FNB UP-Tuks are on a roll with their second runaway victory in succession. Last week it was debutants FNB Varsity College and this time it was FNB UKZN at the receiving end of a 69-3 drubbing at the Howard College Stadium in Durban. The man of the moment was hooker Henry Till who was deservedly named the FNB Player That Rocks after crashing over the try line no less than four times. Till and Walter Visser combined for the first 14 points on the board for the Stripe Generation before Kyle Cyster trashed his way through the Impi defence to add his name to the growing list of try scorers. Ill-disciplined play by UKZN captain Tino Mazindhu led to a penalty try for the visitors. Another try by Till, contributions by Marco Venter and Tharquinn Thane Manuel in this department and a Visser penalty brought the half-time score to 52-0. In the second 40 minutes, the flow stemmed somewhat but not before Kobus Janse van Rensburg, Bayanda Ngubane and that man Till once again crossed the whitewash. A lone Khanya Kama penalty late in the match meant that UKZN avoided a zero on the scoreboard. SCORERS FNB UP-Tuks 69 (52) – Tries: Henry Till (4), Kyle Cyster, Penalty Try, Marco Venter, Tharquinn Thane Manuel, Kobus Janse van Rensburg, Bayanda Ngubane. Conversions: Walter Visser (7). FNB MADIBAZ 29 – FNB TUT 7 FNB Madibaz kept their unblemished record with a convincing 29-7 victory over FNB TUT in Pretoria. The half-time score was 26-0. It was the visitors from the Eastern Cape who drew the first blood when Kyle Erasmus dotted down from a driving maul inside the first 10 minutes. TUT were looking to strike back immediately and went all the way to the try line three times. The Pretoria however fell short on each occasion. Madibaz on the other hand continued their dominance in the set pieces and were awarded with a penalty try when TUT prop Lawrence Nong infringed the maul. Erasmus then powered over to complete his brace. Kehan Myburgh made no mistake from the tee and the Madibaz continued to build on a healthy lead. TUT’s first chance for points in the second half fell short when flyhalf Mihlali Bam failed to boot over a penalty. They also kept losing possession with their handling not up to par. At one point the home side was reduced to 14 men when Knowledge Chaira was sent to the sin bin. TUT kept knocking and were finally rewarded with a consolidation try in the dying minutes of the second half when Vuyani Vanga flew over the try line with Luke van Aardt converting to end the game. FNB VARSITY COLLEGE 38 – 23 FNB CPUT FNB Varsity College are continuing with their impressive debut season when they beat FNB CPUT 38-23 at the IIE Varsity College in Durban. It was the visitors however who were first to score when Keenan Williams took advantage of the bounce of the ball to score the first of his two tries. Keewan Titus was unsuccessful with the conversion. A quick sprint from Macmillian Mudara played a massive role and made it easy for Varsity College captain AB Mthembu to finish off taking the score line to 7-5 as Frederick Marx converted successfully. Marx and Juan Steyl then added their names to the scoreboard with Marx also adding two conversions. In between the two Varsity College tries, Titus slotted a penalty for CPUT from 20 meters out taking the score to 21-8 for the home side. The two sides then traded more tries with Williams scoring his brace for CPUT and Johan Viljoen crossing over for Varsity College’s bonus point. The home team led 26-13 at half-time. Coming back from the break, Steyl secured his brace as Marx converted successfully taking the score to 33-13. CPUT staged a comeback late in the match with back-to-back tries from Kieran Naidoo and Wehan Kruger. Viljoen however put down any thoughts of a come-from-behind win from the visitors when he went over for his second try for Varsity College and sealed an important victory with the play-offs looming. SCORERS FNB Varsity College 38 (26) – Tries: Abande Mthembu, Juan Steyl (2), Frederick Marx, Johan Viljoen (2). Conversions: Frederick Marx (4). FNB WSU 29 – 5 FNB UFH FNB WSU snapped a three-game losing streak when they beat arch-rivals FNB UFH 29-5 at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdanstsane. The half-time score was 17-5. The hosts started on a high note when they took an early lead in the eighth minute thanks to a storming try by inside centre Hlumelo Zitha. He would quickly turn villain however following a dangerous tackle straight from the kick-off following his try. A little dink by All-Black flyhalf Maxwell Curtley Klaasen four minutes later saw WSU fullback Beon Fernell Hartnick finish off a well-executed move that emanated from a line-out close to the opposition try line. The Fort Hare Blues, through left-wing speedster Hlumelo Pangwa, scored a try of their own in the corner in the 28th minute to see the visitors restore some dignity. One of WSU’s most impressive players of the season, Mangaliso Zixesha, would open his account with a quintessential hooker try after finishing off a rolling maul. Yet another enthralling backline try by WSU would see Hartnick cross the whitewash for his second try increasing the lead to 24 – 5 just after the players returned to the field following the half-time break. Zixesha added his second try following a rolling maul in the 56th minute. SCORERS FNB WSU 29 (17) – Tries: Mangaliso Zixesha (2), Beon Fernell Hartnick (2), Hlumelo Zitha. - Tuks want to remain unbeaten
With the 2024 FNB Varsity Shield reaching the halfway mark, top-of-the-table FNB UP-Tuks are gunning for the title and finishing the season without a loss. They were relegated to the Shield competition after they finished bottom of the log in the 2023 FNB Varsity Cup competition and now want to make their way back. Senior player Tharquinn Manuel says they aim to make it seven out of seven. “We are happy as a team to have made it four out of four now, it hasn’t been an easy journey and the aim is to make it seven out of seven but we need to take each game as it comes. “I wouldn’t say the season is wrapped, we had goals set for ourselves and we have been ticking those boxes quite well we have more to go. I believe the plan for this campaign has been well executed.” Tuks leads the numbers board with 29 tries scored while conceding only six. Their forwards have played an integral in their try-scoring department with vice-captain Ethan Burger leading the chart with four tries. Manuel applauds the balance between their backline and forwards. “We have a strong pack of forwards, but the backline is just as strong. The brilliant thing about our team is the balance between the forwards and the backs. “Varsity Shield isn’t an easy tournament to play in. I’ve seen massive teams showing big character against us, like playing WSU down in East London, it wasn’t an easy game.” The five-time Varsity Cup champions travel to play FNB UKZN at home on Friday 22 March, before hosting neighbours FNB TUT in the Tshwane derby with their season concluding with the fixture against FNB Madibaz, also at home. “UKZN is a quality side but we have done our preparations and I believe our action will show on the field, we are not a team that talks too much we prefer to do our thing on the pitch. We still have Tshwane derby and Madibaz coming up, we are process-driven doing the small things and on game day our actions will speak for us,” says Manuel. by Lehlogonolo Ditshego
- CPUT to stay positive despite tough campaign
With only three round-robin games left of the 2024 FNB Varsity Shield competition, FNB CPUT find themselves in unfamiliar territory. The 2023 runners-up have only won one match and are having to hope for a few balls to hop in their favour to make the playoffs. But despite being seventh on the log, they are on equal points with fourth-placed FNB WSU whom they will host on 5 April. CPUT will be hoping to get the most log points from their remaining three matches, two of which are away. Under the mentorship of head coach Alastair Theys, CPUT won back-to-back Varsity Shield titles in 2019 and 2021 while placing as runners-up in 2022 and 2023. They admit this year things have been decidedly different. "It has been a tough campaign for us with a lot of challenges, but the boys are in a positive space. “We have seen great improvements from just the TUT game to the UFH fixture and despite losing the game against UFH, there are a lot of positives to take from it. One of which is that we are hoping that we can keep on improving and pick up two or three wins, to end off well. “It is the first time we find ourselves in this situation, it is unknown territory from which we have been learning. The main thing, however, is that the guys are positive." A host of top CPUT players who were prominent in the 2019-2023 period have moved on. This has left Theys, and his experienced assistant coaches Jongikhaya Nokwe and Jerome Paarwater, with virtually a new team. Roland van der Heever, currently playing for FNB Maties while completing his honours at Stellenbosch University, was part of a formidable and reliable loose trio combination with Ché Klaasen and former captain Keanan Solomons. At the back, fullback Caine Stadler, nippy scrumhalf Hugan Engelbrecht and speedster Heinrico Hartogh have all left massive gaps. Ahead of the 2024 season Theys said that the current crop of players is very young and that the team will need to build strong combinations, gain experience, and have that team chemistry that only comes from playing together for a few seasons. by Lyndon Julius
- Maties looking to defend the title
FNB Maties will be looking to successfully retain their title as champions of the inaugural FNB Varsity Cup Women’s tournament when they kick off their campaign against FNB UKZN at the Howard College Stadium in Durban on Friday 22 March. According to Maties head coach Johann Zeier, nobody knew what to expect from the competition last year, but it was great for the development of the game. “Yes, we had no idea what the intensity or speed of the women’s game would be. This year we are kind of preparing for the same. We don’t know what to expect because we don't know to what level people have upped their game.” Zeier admits Maties were not able to retain all their players from last year because a lot of the ladies have either graduated or finished their studies whilst some went to overseas clubs and others just finished playing rugby. “It’s a mixed bag of reasons, but some of them have just moved on. We have retained some of the ladies, but we have had to start quite fresh with a bit of a newer squad. If you look at it in terms of three-year phases, I would say we are now in year one with the average age being a lot lower in our squad this year.” Zeier believes the big challenge this year will be that they have no idea how opposing teams have developed. “It’s quite difficult to tell. So we are just trying to focus on ourselves and try to be as prepared as we can be for the game. We have been through quite a tough pre-season. It was longer than last year and the players’ workload was much more. “The preparation has been quite demanding and the ladies have done well to get through it. I think we are in a good place at the moment.” “Our first game will give us a benchmark as to where we stand with regards to the rest of the competition.” PROVISIONAL SQUAD (subject to change): Erin Bond, Michaella Evlambiou, Lungelo Mvelase, Sesethu Ntamnani, Christien Langenhoven, Ziane Muller, Vunene Miyambo, Andisiwe Mkiva, Tiffany Roberts, Sisipho Mkeli, Taebron Jursa, Maria Masebe, Jihaan Benito, Ankia Viljoen, Danai Makota, Janke Oosthuizen, Liza Slabbert, Stefney-Rose de Vries, Joelle Botha, Taliyah Bussack, Lara Schats, Elme Kruger, Ropafadzo Madyah, Zelmari Pretorius, Mijeane Fryer, Anoescka Andreas, Whitney Gordon, Kayleen Muggels, Leah Cilliers, Lindokuhle Mtsweni, Emma Oliver, Lisa Malherbe. - Captain Jandré van Zyl says TUT need to continue to fight
FNB TUT have their backs against the wall in their quest to advance to the knockout stage of the 2024 FNB Varsity Shield competition. Captain Jandré van Zyl says his side will need to fight to stay in contention. “The season hasn’t been going according to plan, there were a few bumps in the road but I feel our biggest work so far is being able to execute better. We are creating chances but we just can’t get over the try line. “(Reaching) the playoff is in our hands and (we can) not rely on other teams to lose some games. At this point, we are focusing on what we can control and that is the next three games. “I am confident that the guys will go out and fight because that is what we need to do now to keep the playoff hopes alive. We have to fight so we won’t be in the uncomfortable talks about relegation.” The Vikings are currently occupying the sixth spot on the log, level on points with fourth-placed FNB WSU, fifth-placed FNB UKZN and FNB CPUT in seventh place. TUT still have games left against log-leaders and Pretoria neighbours FNB UP-Tuks, FNB Madibaz and former champions FNB UFH. Van Zyl says there is still a lot left to play for. “Madibaz and Tuks are good, but this week’s preparation has been really good and confidence in the camp is solid. The playoffs are reachable and that’s what we are preparing for, we need that execution. My eyes are on the Madibaz (on Friday), we don’t want to look too far in the future. I feel comfortable and confident about Friday.” by Lehlogonolo Ditshego
- UKZN coach Naseeb Abrahams says TUT victory came at the right time
A sense of relief filled the Durban Howard College Stadium last week after FNB UKZN won their first game of the 2024 FNB Varsity Shield competition when they beat FNB TUT. The Impis’ slow start to the season had many starting to believe that the men from KZN are heading towards a similar season they had last year. No wonder coach Naseeb Abrahams says the victory over TUT came at the right time as they needed the psychological boost. “The win last week was massive for the players. The first three games, not going in our favour affected the boys mentally. But to come back the way they did shows the calibre of players that we have and their ability.” A big hurdle faces UKZN on Friday 22 March in Durban as they come up against log leaders FNB UP-Tuks who are fresh off the massive victory over FNB Varsity College last week. “We’ve got a huge game against Tuks. They are a Varsity Cup level team and they have played at that level for a long time. It will be a good test of our program and for our boys as well and we expect a big physical game against them,” says Abrahams. With all teams apart from Tuks, Varsity College and FNB Madibaz and FNB Varsity having only a single victory to their names, the Impis should consider themselves fortunate to be sitting just outside of a semi-final spot in fifth position. Abrahams admits to this. “I believe we are a bit unfortunate to find ourselves where we are. I did say it before that this Varsity Shield will be a tough campaign as all teams are quite strong. And it looks like it could be anybody’s game even at this point in the season.” With the odds not completely in their favour, UKZN are up against FNB UFH and FNB CPUT after their Tuks encounter with the former two teams also chasing that fourth-place position. “At this point, it’s just about taking each game at a time. We will get through Tuks, and then we can worry about UFH and then about CPUT. We just have to put our foot forward and see where we land at the end of the competition,” says Abrahams. by Mpendulo Letsoalo
- UFH Blues fighting for survival
From champions in 2022 to bottom of the log after four rounds in the 2024 FNB Varsity Shield competition. This has been the story of FNB UFH in this year’s competition. Captain Kamvelihle Fatyela describes the atmosphere in the team as “intense”, emphasizing the significance of every upcoming match. "Every game is a must-win game," he says. "Our goal is clear – to see ourselves playing in the playoffs," Fatyela added, underlining the team's determination to take each game as it comes. Fatyela has expressed a personal desire to lift the Varsity Shield trophy once more before concluding his tenure in the competition. "It's my last year playing in the competition, I would appreciate lifting the trophy for the UFH family once again," he remarks, highlighting the sentimental significance of the journey ahead. Fatyela credits UFH's resilience and unity in overcoming early challenges. "(It is about) not giving up and sticking together as a unit through hard times." He also acknowledges the team's adaptability and perseverance as well as the learning curve for first-time players in the competitive Varsity Shield environment. Addressing the importance of the upcoming fixture against FNB WSU, Fatyela emphasized its significance beyond the log standings. "Pretty much, if we want to achieve our goal, we have to win all the remaining games.” Fatyela further underscored the emotional depth of the derby encounter against their Eastern Cape neighbours. "It truly shows how important and memorable that game will be and what it means to us as players and the coaches too.” The match between UFH and WSU is set to kick off at 15:00 on Friday 22 March. by Thembela Tangana
- Varsity College captain Abande Mthembu praises team for a positive season
Sitting third on the log, captain Abande ‘AB’ Mthembu admits debutants FNB Varsity College have had a dream start to the 2024 FNB Varsity Shield competition. “It’s been a great experience. I think for the most part the closeness of our group has been reflected by our results and our ability to come back from difficult situations. “Our fans have been supportive; our management does an amazing job to make sure everything runs smoothly. I’d like to thank our VC supporters for always being there for us and backing us, it makes a massive difference.” After starting with three consecutive victories, Varsity College were brought back to earth when they suffered a massive 21-75 defeat against log leaders FNB UP-Tuks in Pretoria. Mthembu says they only have themselves to blame after they were struck by reality. “The loss is a reality that we have to take responsibility for and accept. We let ourselves down, I felt that we were in the game after the first 20 minutes but after that, our error rate gave Tuks the platform and opportunity to convert our errors into points. It doesn’t define who we are as a team and how our season will finish.” Mthembu has asked for unity from his team and for their sights to remain on their main objectives. “It’s been a very positive for season for us, there’s some exciting things ahead and we just want to take it one week at a time. Our weekly objectives allow us to stay engaged and present enough to deal with the task at hand and more importantly to enjoy the process and experience of the campaign. “Our message as a team is to stay in it and keep fighting for each other every week. Anything that tests our unity can only make us stronger.” by Mpendulo Letsoalo
- FNB Varsity Cup - Players who impressed - Round 5
At the halfway mark of the 2024 FNB Varsity Cup competition, a clear gap is beginning to develop between the top and bottom half of the log. Defending champions NWU Eagles, FNB UFS Shimlas, FNB Maties and FNB UCT Ikeys seem to be heading towards the semi-finals with the only question – who will be hosting who, and where. Here are some of the standout players from round 5. Zane Bester (FNB UFS Shimlas) Zane won the battle of the Bester boeties when he scored two point-of-origin tries in Shimlas’ comprehensive victory over brother Zachary’s FNB CUT Ixias. He nearly dotted down for a hat trick, but it was not to be. The UFS outside centre was rock solid on defence while showing a blistering pace on the attack. High School: Hoërskool Jim Fouche Provincial representation: U13 Craven Week, U18 Academy Week Marvelous Mahimbyi (FNB NWU Eagles) Just as his name implies, Marvelous Mahimbyi was marvellous for the Eagles in their victory over FNB UJ. The number eight scored four tries and had a massive impact, especially in the set pieces which was a contributing factor to the win as his team is looking forward to defending their title successfully. High School: Hoërskool Ben Vorster Provincial representation: U18 Craven Week, Provincial U20/21, Currie Cup (Premier and/or 1st Division) DeWet Marais (FNB Maties) DeWet Marais made a few telling metres and capitalised in the second half when the Maroon Machine ran away victors in the Cape derby against FNB UWC. The number eight ran hard at the opposition and was a vital link in the midfield when Maties were on the attack. Marais ignited the fire among his pack of forwards in a match that started rather slow for Maties. He was rewarded for his efforts with two tries. High School: Grey College Provincial representation: U13 Craven Week, U16 Grant Khomo Week, U18 Craven Week, SA Schools, Provincial U19, Provincial U20/21, Currie Cup (Premier and/or 1st Division) Ntokozo Makhaza (FNB UCT Ikeys) After leading 28-10 at half-time against FNB Wits, UCT had to settle for a draw when the Orange Army staged a massive comeback in the latter half of the match. Ntokozo Makhaza kept Ikeys in the match with his boot and looked threatening when he had the ball in hand. His agility and speed are some of his strongest attributes while he also has a great defensive game, ready to make the chase and put in the tackles when necessary. - Shimlas sitting pretty at the top, Maties and Ikeys gearing up for playoffs
FNB UFS Shimlas safely navigated their way past city neighbours FNB CUT in round five of the 2024 FNB Varsity Cup and are now almost assured of a home semi-final. FNB Maties won the Western Cape derby against FNB UWC while FNB Wits came from behind to share the spoils with FNB UCT Ikeys. Defending champions FNB NWU Eagles and FNB UJ will have to return to the UJ Stadium tomorrow (Tuesday 19 March) after their match was called off because of inclement weather. FNB UFS 59 – 40 FNB CUT FNB UFS Shimlas claimed the bragging rights and a fourth straight bonus point win with a 59-40 victory over FNB CUT Ixias in Bloemfontein. In a game of two halves, it was one-way traffic in the first stanza at a packed CUT Rugby Stadium as the Shimlas taught their neighbours a lesson in running rugby. The super-impressive Shimlas outside centre, Zane Bester, led the charge for the visitors by scoring a brace of point-of-origin tries in the first forty-minute period. Jandré Nel went over for the Shimlas’ first of four point-of-origin tries seven-pointers that was set up by the fleet-footed winger, Kirwin du Preez, who also produced the magic for Bester’s first try. There was also a penalty try for the Shimlas when Du Preez, who deserved a try, got taken out with a high tackle by Liam Prinsloo. For this tackle, Prinsloo was sent to the pink couch for ten minutes. On the stroke of half-time, the Ixias finally managed to get on the board when the tighthead prop, Sisipho Nofuya, powered over for a converted try to see his team trailing 7-43 at the interval. In the second 40-minute period the flow of the traffic went the other way and the Ixias showcased their renowned fighting spirit with Janco Cloete, Adielson Gouveia (point-of-origin), Juan Smith, Asekho Marubelela and Tiaan Naudé scoring to give themselves a sniff. But, tries by Shimlas flyhalf Ethan Wentzel and captain Neels Volschenk put it out of reach for the valiant Ixias. FNB MATIES 63 – 14 FNB UWC Five-time FNB Varsity Cup champions FNB Maties outgunned bottom-of-the-log FNB UWC 63-19 in their Cape derby in Bellville. The men from Stellenbosch built a solid base following a 19-7 half-time lead. The home side made some telling runs in the opening quarter of the match when flyhalf Aaron Swartz swerved his way around three would-be Maties defenders to dot down for the first try. Conwill Conradie added the extras. Maties bided their time well and worked economically with the possession and territory that they had in the first half, resulting in Vernon Matongo crashing over for a Maties unconverted try. The visitors soon compounded their score when DeWet Marais and Juan Mostert ran in for two unanswered tries. It was a Maroon Machine affair in the second half when Maties ran in two point-of-origin and two five-pointers, to lead 7-49 lead as the second strategy break loomed. A late consolation try courtesy of replacement scrumhalf Wian van der Sandt meant UWC could go into double digits on the scoreboard before the final whistle blew. Maties ran in a few more tries towards the end of the match with their experience in the end proving too much for UWC in their first season back in the Cup division. SCORERS FNB Maties 63 (19) – Tries: Vernon Matongo (2), DeWet Marais, Juan Mostert, Christiaan van Heerden-Smith, Louw Nel, Ryan Manuel, Edrich Viljoen, DeWet Marais. Conversions: Juan Mostert (6). FNB WITS 33 – 33 FNB UCT FNB Wits fought back to hold a determined FNB UCT Ikeys to a 33-33 stalemate at the Wits Stadium. It took a last-minute try and conversion for the Witsies to avoid defeat against a team they enjoyed the better of in the territory and possession battle. - UFH ready to dominate
FNB UFH are gearing up for the 2024 FNB Varsity Cup Women’s tournament with confidence, having secured victories in all their friendly matches against experienced teams. UFH head coach Ntyatyambo Mkhafu expressed his satisfaction after two months of rigorous preparation. Despite some challenges, he says he is optimistic and that the depth of the squad is a significant advantage. "Unfortunately, we had an issue with experienced players not returning to the team due to academic issues, but having a large squad helped us a lot. We also had the problem of new players who had never played before, but we can't turn them away, rugby is about improvement, and they will undoubtedly learn with time." Mkhafu says they are focused on surpassing last year's performance and are approaching the upcoming season with a game-by-game mindset. Despite obstacles, the team's determination and preparation reflect their commitment to making strides in 2024. According to Mkhafu, Sivuyiseko Makhomazi, Buyekezo Mdliki, and Lilitha Vakalisa are the players to watch out for, having all served as captains before. He says the trio will play a pivotal role in ensuring a successful and memorable season for UFH. - FNB Varsity Shield - Players who impressed - Round 4
At the halfway mark of the 2024 FNB Varsity Shield competition, FNB UP-Tuks and FNB Madibaz are the only unbeaten teams and occupy the top two positions on the log. The third position belongs to FNB Varsity Shield while FNB WSU are in fourth. Here are some of the standout players from round 4. Chad-Lee Valentine (FNB UP-Tuks) Chad-Lee Valentine played an important role in the Stripe Generation’s massive victory over debutants FNB Varsity College. The nippy scrumhalf disrupted the opponent’s play in and around the maul, while at the same time guiding Tuks in their driving mauls. The 22-year-old was at the centre of Tuks’ communication and managed to get his name on the score sheet through a cheeky piece of play. High School: Hoërskool Garsfontein Provincial representation: U16 Grant Khomo Week, U18 Academy Week, U18 Craven Week Mzwakhe Hlupheko (FNB Madibaz) Mzwakhe Hlupheko was massive at the breakdown and deserved all the credit that came his way in the hard-fought victory over FNB WSU. The burly flanker didn’t give an inch and stopped wave after wave of attack from the opposition. With ball in hand, Hlupheko was also a force to be reckoned with. When the final whistle blew, he was awarded the accolade of the Player That Rocks. High School: Hoërskool Middelburg Provincial representation: U18 Academy Week Khanya Kama (FNB UKZN) Wearing the number ten jersey, Khanya Kama was a pivotal player in his team’s first victory of the season over FNB TUT. He contributed a try, three conversions and five penalties and was deservedly named as the Player That Rocks. The confident Kama put in a couple of solid tackles to add to his fantastic all-around performance. High School: Queensburgh High Provincial representation: Club Rugby Danielle Padiachy (FNB CPUT) Despite CPUT losing to UFH the Tekkies had moments of brilliance and on more than one occasion it was winger Danielle Padiachy who was involved. He picked up a brace in spectacular fashion as he broke the defence with speed, power and a deadly sidestep. The CPUT backline looks especially dangerous if they get the ball out wide and Padiachy is always on the hunt for the tryline.
